Susan Moran Dyer died peacefully on April 15, 2025, surrounded by her devoted wife of 35 years Sharon Stroble, and her loving children Kate and Ben Dyer. She was 85.
Born in Colville, Washington in 1939, Susan and her sister Teresa were raised in the Puget Sound area. After graduating from Federal Way High School in 1957, Susan attended Stanford University, where she graduated with great distinction, earning both a Bachelor's and Master's degree.
After college, Susan married Tom Dyer of Astoria, Oregon and together they raised their three children, Kate, Joe and Ben in Seattle. They amicably divorced in 1983, and Susan earned her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing at Seattle University in 1984, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She immediately began her career as an oncology nurse at Group Health hospital on Capitol Hill in Seattle (now Kaiser). She enjoyed a meaningful and rewarding nursing career and was honored to win the American Cancer Society's Lane W. Adams Award, which annually recognizes a handful of people nationwide "who consistently exhibit excellence and compassion in providing care to cancer patients, going beyond their duties to make a difference in the life of cancer patients and their families." She eventually moved into hospice nursing, helping families and patients with end-of-life care until her retirement in 2005.
In 1989, she met her lifelong match in Sharon Stroble, and the two married in 1990. They enjoyed a rich, active life together, which included hiking, backpacking, sailing, being grandmothers, kayaking, traveling the world and spending time with family and friends in San Francisco, Oregon and Whidbey Island. Their home on Queen Anne in Seattle was filled with art, books, backpacking gear, carvings, rocks, good food and love.
Susan was predeceased by her son Joe in 2016. She is survived by her wife, Sharon Stroble of
Oak Harbor, Washington; her surviving children Kate Dyer and her wife Ellen Fey of San Francisco and Ben Dyer and his wife Heather Healy Dyer, of Sacramento; her sister Teresa Moran Schwartz and her husband Dan Schwartz of Washington D.C.; her niece Joanna Schwartz and her husband Teddy Shapiro of Los Angeles; and her ex-husband Tom Dyer and his wife Sallie Reynolds of Seattle. Susan also leaves behind her beloved grandson Ben Dyer, a student at Northeastern University in Boston, whose education Susan generously funded through an account she opened when he was born.
Susan was whip-smart and her wit, insight and extreme competency at everything she did were legendary. She was an elegant, compassionate, loving and classy woman who will be sorely missed by the many who loved her.
