Susan Harmon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 23 to Dec. 24, 2022.
Harmon, Susan 2/4/1945 - 12/21/2022 Grand Rapids age 77, passed away unexpectedly on December 21. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Elizabeth Harmon; and her sister, Sharon Balcer. She is survived by her brothers, Richard (Lila), Donald (Nancy), Thomas (Teri); and sister, Mary Hormuth. She had 17 nieces and nephews, and 35 grand nieces and nephews. Susie graduated from Catholic Central in 1963 and developed friendships she maintained forever. She always enjoyed contact with her friends, be it a brief (well, Susie's idea of brief) chat on the phone, lunch, dinner, or a day trip. These friends were also very supportive of her during brief periods of illness in recent years. She then went on to graduate from Holy Cross School of Nursing and for the majority of her career was a public health nurse for Kent County. She loved her job and the people she worked with and was able to find humor in the everyday trials and tribulations of the workplace. Susie loved to shop, especially for others. Partly because of her great love of gift giving, Susie greatly enjoyed Christmas. To visit her house at Christmas time was to feel like one stepped into a Hallmark movie. It is especially sad for those she left behind that she died at this most joyous time of year. There were many different sides to Susie: trips to Notre Dame football games provided excitement (and/or depression) and was just one of the many wonderful things she did with her mother: the casino trips with her sister, Sharon to Gun Lake provided her with some low stakes fun at the slot machine: assisting with St. Paul's funeral lunches demonstrated just a small part of her caring for others and (also on occasion provided her with leftovers that were slid out the back door). Above all else Susie was about faith and family. The Catholic church and particularly St. Paul's Parish were very important to her. She never had a family of her own, but she was very much a cherished member of her siblings' families and their children's families. She will be greatly missed by all of them. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 28 at 10:00 am preceded by visitation at 9:00 am. Visitation will also be held at O'Brien Gerst Funeral Care, 3980 Cascade Rd. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546 on Tuesday, December 27 from 5-7pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Education Fund, 2750 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.

Dear Susie, I often thought of you, in the years that have flown past since I was at St Paul the apostle 1985/1986. I am sad to learn of your sudden death. Fond memories of your dear mother and sister Sharon. What a fine display you always had preparing for Christmas. We had so many laughs, with your beautiful mam, and Sharon. May they have the best bed in heaven. Slán, goodbye, as you continue your journey with the angels.

Susie-my first friend after moving to Grand Rapids-nurses together. It has been a long time -yes-but you will always be in my heart and prayers, as a special friend. In a relatively brief time, you had a profound impact on my life course, directing it in ways I never dreamed possible. For this, I am-and will always be-eternally grateful! You introduced me to your wonderful family-family I missed and always wanted! Great role models! Thank you! God love you and send your dear family peace at this tough time! Rest In Peace Susie! Les

I was sorry to hear about Susie's death, we have many fond memories of her. We always had a great visiting with her and we, high school demons, would rather be with her than with each other. (we had the fond memories and great times with Mary too!). Please accept our prayers and sympathy for your loss, the world has lost an epic character! Bernie and Therese Clingman Porn

Sue hired me at the health department and we remained in contact after her retirement. Eventually I moved on and every once in a while we would connect. I still display the Christmas tree she made for me and our team. Last month, I saw Sue jump the Culver's curb and I text her to see where she was headed in such a hurry? She replied her nail appointment Lol. I will cherish our last interaction

It was a gift to have known Sue for many years, starting in high school. She was spirited and fun, with a wide circle of friends. Though years of health challenges, Suzy´s sparkle was undiminished! It was a gift to have known her!

Sue was a dear friend and we graduated at CC together. We connected many times & attended class reunions together having many laughs. In recent years she would pick me up for everything because after my back surgery I have struggled but she knew I loved to go even to the casino! That meant a lot to me
She loved her family & was CC fan & ND ! Thx to Mary & family they all looked out for her & I always heard about Nieces & Nephews, she was so proud! She will never be forgotten. Love, hugs & prayers to all!

It was with great sadness on the passing of the beloved "Aunt Susie"a wonderful and kind hearted person. I first met "Aunt Susie" aged 11 when I came to the USA from Ireland and then met up again in Ireland when she came to visit in later years. To Mary and the Hormuth family "Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam" (May her soul be seated on God's right hand). May the light of heaven shine on her gentle soul and may the angels lead her into paradise to rest in the arms of the lord. May she rest in peace.

I have been a neighbor and friend of Susie for many years. We talked from our cars, in the street or in our yards and always a good talk. This is a shock and she will be greatly missed. Praying for peace and comfort for the family.

Having graduating from Susie at Catholic Central class of 1963, I remember all the sweetness of this kind lady, seeing her at a few Class reunions, still the same sweet lady, running into her in the past now and then, still the same, Heaven has gained an Angel, RIP Susie

This is such a shock! I just talked with her at Costco only a couple days ago. Over the tears I would run into her often while shopping there, or the mall etc! So sorry for your loss, what a great place to celebrate Christmas for her tho! Heaven gained an angel! Prayers for her family!
