Susan Landry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 29 to Sep. 30, 2011.
LANDRY Susan Jennifer Landry, a popular New Orleans artist, died Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 3:19am. She was 52. A lifelong proud resident of New Orleans, she was born May 3, 1959 in Kansas City while her parents were on a trip. She is survived by her loyal spouse Martha Brewer, her mother Victoria Moussa Landry, her sister Paula Landry, her brother Billy Landry, two half brothers Kai and Andrew and probably by a half-sister who was never legally recognized. She is also survived by her nieces Ava and Adelyn Landry, Emily Johnson and nephew Ben Brewer, a host of cousins and innumerable friends and devotees. Susan and Martha were married in a civil ceremony in Toronto Canada on December 29, 2003. Ironically, in 2005 they costumed for Mardi Gras as the threat of gay marriage, little knowing that their journey would became a testament to what a false issue that threat is. A local, self-taught folk artist and musician, Susan was strongly inspired and influenced by all types of New Orleans music, sub-cultures and inner city activities. Her unique folk paintings were painted backwards on glass and then suspended above a canvas or board painting. Susan's pieces are constructed and layered with her canvas paintings, wood, metal and found local objects. This Eglomise technique of painting dates back to the pre-Roman era but is an unusual talent rarely seen in contemporary art. She began painting at the age of 35 when experimenting with an old windowpane. Susan's work has been exhibited at several galleries including an individual show at the Contemporary Arts Center, d.o.c.s., Stella Jones, her own Brewer-Landry Gallery, and most recently at Ariodante Gallery. Susan's work was also shown at Sorelle's in Little Rock. Susan regularly donated her art for local charity auctions. Susan was a true Renaissance woman, a jack of all trades and, unlike others, a master of almost all of them. She brought out the best in everyone by her caring attitude, devotion to duty and tireless energy. She attended Ursuline Academy and graduated a year early from Eleanor McMain. She received a B.A. in Biology From Tulane University and an MPH from Tulane University School of Public Health. She worked in tobacco control, as a delivery driver for Fed-Ex, studied and worked in speech pathology, a paralegal and a retailer. She completed an accelerated RN with Our Lady Of The Lake College and worked as an operating room nurse with Tulane Hospital. She was a member of the Human Rights Campaign and Krewe du Vieux. The daughter of Victoria, who was a very successful retailer in the French Quarter with Victoria's Shoes, Susan founded a trendy clothing store Nous Viola and then co-founded, co-owned and slaved tirelessly at the very successful Coffee and Company at multiple locations. She also owned and operated the former Brewer-Landry Gallery. In her spare time she studied jazz and blues guitar. After Katrina's flooding, Susan's heart-felt painting of flooded shotgun houses, titled "Proud To Swim Home," was screen printed on tee shirts. All revenues from the sale of those shirts were donated to the New Orleans Covenant House. Following this successful venture she went on do several other tee shirts collections based on her paintings, most recently a Mardi Gras Indian theme. Diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic lung cancer in June 2010, her illness did not stop her for a minute. She sought aggressive surgery and treatment at Tulane, and was enrolled in a clinical trial at MD Anderson in Houston. She entered Hospice (which she called Hopscotch) on September 7th, and died at home with her spouse and Flynn and Garbo, their Great Danes, by her side. Susan and Martha wrote about their cancer and life journey on the widely followed blog: www.caringbridge.org/visit/susanlandry. While receiving treatment, she continued to pursue her music and painting, producing a body of new work for her successful show at Ariodante Gallery in November 2010. Only two days before she died, Susan spent the day at the Street Fare Derby Festival at the Fairgrounds. A Mass will be said at St Mary's Assumption Church, 2030 Constance St., on Friday, September 30 at 4pm. A Memorial Service will be held at noon at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., with visitation from 10am-12pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to www.Caringbridge.org/visit/susanlandry, Tulane Cancer Center, MD Anderson Clinical Trials Center, American Cancer Society, Great Dane Rescue of Louisiana or whatever you are into.

Susan, I have your reverse glass painting of the artichoke, "To Be Eaten One Leaf at a Time". I´m trying to get it back to your family or your friends. I purchased it at a gallery in New Orleans, but I am in central Florida now. Wherever your spirit is wandering these days, please inspire a loved one to look back at this page and find me.

You were taken from us too soon, but you left these incredible gifts through which you live on. I have enjoyed this painting for over 20 years but I´m getting old now and it´s important to me that your legacy of artwork get back into the right hands at home in NOLA.

Dear Susan:
I am privileged to have witnessed so many of your lives and have applauded so many of your dreams, schemes and accomplishments. You are and were and will always be the positive space in ambitions and accomplishments...nursing, fashion, food, love.

Thank you and Vicki for letting me bake cookies at Coffee and Company and all the other times our lives came together starting at Weinsteins, continuing throughout!

You were always the strongest of us all! And always the "hope"! And still are!

Susan Nash, privileged to have known you and your family!

Susan lived life well. After any encounter with her, you felt buoyant-- her diligence and strength lifted so many souls. She taught me how to stretch my neck after inquiring, "Brandon, why are you hunched over? You look like you're in pain... look do this..."--the greatest caretaker. Now I stand a little taller. Let's care for one another with diligence and strength in Susan's honor.

Susan took care of my sister and I when we were little. I have many fond and cherished memories of her wonderful energy, spirit and kindness. Our families lived around the corner from each other and it seems like just yesterday my mom and I were over at the Landry home on 8th street. Through the years, when I would come back into town I use to love seeing Susan. She always had a warm and loving hug for me and I appreciated our friendship. I wish that I could be there today as you celebrate her life. All of my love to the Landry family and Martha.

I LOVE YOU my best friend. I miss your grace, dignity, & selflessness, but most of all I'll miss your silliness & the way we used to laugh.
I LOVE YOU my best friend for being there through the tough times always making me feel safe in your presence.
I LOVE YOU my best friend. I will miss the phone calls, the lunches, the fashion advice, and the shopping together, but most of all I'll miss YOU!

I met Susan in 1980 when we both worked at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. We were best friends for the four years that I lived in NO, but eventually lost touch after I moved back to NY. We just reconnected this past year and talked about the cancer that had touched us both. Susan always had such an indomitable spirit, and more good energy than anyone I ever met before or since...truly beautiful inside and out!
My condolences to all that loved her. I know there are many.

Oh Susan! I thought I knew you as an Rn and coworker, but you were into so many things that I now realize I knew but a small portion of the incredibly active and energetic person you have been- quite a busy girl! Your light was so bright and I am lucky to have been able to stand next to you for a while. Deepest heartfelt condolences to Martha and family.

Martha, Paula, Billy, Kai, Andrew and Aunt Vickie,
As one of the "host of cousins", I essentially met Susan (Susie) for the first time and only for a short time this past year. It was evident, even from such a short meeting, that she was a special person.
She stood at my side and just kept saying "I can't believe we finally got to know each other." Susie seemed to look right into my soul to really want to connect! From that meeting, there was no way for me to know the depth of her caring and giving nature, but I did know and feel how special her soul is. I'll miss her without even knowing her as you did. Sincerely, cousin: Edmond (MAGOO) Landry

Paula, Martha, Billy, and Victoria - Words cannot express the sorrow I feel for the loss of Susan. I always admired Susan, for her multiple talents, her energy, and her zest for life. I have a fond memory of a holiday at my nephew's house with Susan, Martha, Paula, and Victoria. It was just a wonderful laid back day, eating and watching movies. Susan will always be in my memories and missed tremendously. Ya'll are in my thoughts and prayers, today and each day after.

Susan had such a strong life force. We met her and Martha in Morroco in 2001. What sticks in my memory was that after a particular rigorous day, Larry (Larry Best) and I were having drinks in our room, Susan came by, saw what we were doing, shouted "party in the guy's room!" and before we knew it, there was a party with most of the tour group attending. I had such a hangover the next day. Martha, since we cannot be there in person, as we live out of state now, we will be with you and Susan in spirit.
