Susan Waldman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 20, 2009.
BARNSTABLE — Susan E. Waldman, 58, of Barnstable, died at her home on July 17, 2009, of complications from pancreatic cancer. Her husband and beloved greyhound, "Kane," were at her side.

The daughter of the late Maurice and Florence Waldman, Susan is survived by her husband, Gary Williams of Barnstable. She was the sister of Michael Waldman and his wife Eve of Virginia.

Born and raised in Chelsea, Susan graduated from Northeastern University and received her master's degree from Trenton State College in New Jersey.

Since moving to Cape Cod in 1983 she worked for Cape Cod Collaborative and, most of the time, the Oak Ridge School in Sandwich. This past year she was named co-employee of the year as she juggled her dedication to her students and managing her illness. She enjoyed the challenge of her occupation and the rewards when the students did well. As she often said about her job, "This is who I am." She will be missed by her colleagues and her many students, current and former.

She also enjoyed summers off, which were spent at Dowses Beach, outdoor sports and travel.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Mid-Cape Medical Center, Cape Cod Hospital Davenport-Mugar Cancer Center, and VNA Hospice for their care and kindness during her illness.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, in the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road, Route 28, Marstons Mills. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Lothrop Hill Cemetery, Barnstable.

Memorial donations in her name may be sent to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 7000, EL Segundo, CA 90245; or to Greyhound Pets of America, c/o Millie Merritt, 35 Cedar Road, Avon, MA 02322.

Sue Waldman was so important to my children during their time at Oak Ridge. During IEP meetings, she would LISTEN and add invaluable observations. This was especially appreciated because, unlike the other staff present, she was the only one who had worked with them since they were small and could see a more complete picture. She was a treasure...we will miss her.

I was so sorry to hear of Sue's passing. She was very kind and helpful to me at Oak Ridge. Her strength and optimism were truly inspiring, and I will miss her cheerful nature.

We will certainly miss you Sue. Her dedication to the students was amazing. I remember when she began servicing my daugther for speech services, even before the IEP was finalized. She has done an amazing job with my daughter and we will truly miss her.

Sue was a very good friend to me when I first moved to the Cape and didn't know many people. Her friendly and genuine smile were a welcome sight to greet me every day. What I will always remember about Sue was that she took the time to talk and listen even when she was really very busy. And she was always right! We miss you already, Sue.

Sue taught me what courage means. I never once heard her complain as the illness progressed. She continued to share smiles with her students and colleagues each day. The lives she touched as a teacher and a friend are too numerous to calculate. I will miss her every day...

I'm very sorry to hear of Sue's passing. I will always remember her for her courageous battle with cancer, her passion for her job and her love for the students that she worked with. She will be greatly missed by her colleagues and of course "her kids". Rest in Peace Sue!
