Published by Legacy Remembers on May 14, 2017.
Rodgers,

Dr. Suzanne H.

Irondequoit: A noted physiologist and author, died from a stroke on May 8, 2017, at the age of 77. She was the daughter of the late Priscilla and John Rodgers of Irondequoit. She is survived by her brother, Allan Rodgers of Winchester, Massachusetts, her sister, Joan Dinsmore of Portland, Maine, her brother, David Rodgers of Craftsbury, Vermont, several cousins, nieces and nephews and her long time special close friends, Shirley Maloney-Jordan and Bonita Boyd Roderstroms.

Dr. Rodgers was a graduate of Dana Hall School and Vassar College and received a Ph.D. degree in physiology from the University of Rochester. She was employed by Eastman Kodak as part of an interdisciplinary human factors team that analyzed the stresses of work and designed trainings and improvements to make the jobs safer and improve the health and productivity of workers. She co-authored and edited a treatise on the subject: Kodak's Ergonomic Design for People at Work. She became an independent human factors and ergonomics consultant for many large employers across the United States and abroad. She was an expert on back pain and made presentations before federal agencies and at many conferences around the world. She wrote several pioneering books, including Working With Backache. Dr. Rodgers was a lover of music, and served on the board of directors of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. She was generous with her time and contributions to many charitable organizations, including Literary Volunteers, Lollypop Farm and Planned Parenthood. She followed public issues & politics avidly, often doing door to door and telephone canvassing for candidates for elected office. She was a master at plays on words and had a great sense of humor. She was beloved by her friends and neighbors and kept up her good cheer and words of wisdom despite her recent health limitations.

Contributions in her memory may be sent to Vassar College, 124 Raymond Ave., PO Box 737, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-9847, or to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, 108 East Ave., Rochester, NY 14604. Her family will hold a memorial service for her on Saturday, June 24 at 2 PM at her home, 169 Huntington Hills, Irondequoit. A confirmation of the date will be on the Dierna Funeral Home website, Diernafuneralhome.com. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to Allan Rodgers, 5 McCall Road, Winchester, MA 01890.

I got to know Sue when she came to California to consult with us at State Fund and when she came out to speak at various ergonomics events. I learned something new from her every time she spoke. She was funny, kind, brilliant and encouraging. She will be missed. My condolences to her family and friends.

Suzanne Rogers was an outstanding researcher and practitioner in the field of ergonomics. During her career she developed guidelines and useful tools for evaluating the stresses from performing manual and repetitive work tasks. She was a brilliant lecturer and an entertaining speaker at conferences and other professional meetings. I had many dealings with her as an ergonomics specialist at NIOSH, a federal agency dedicated to worker health and safety. Her two part textbooks entitled "Ergonomic Design for People at Work" remain a standard for training engineers, physiologists, and psychologists in the field of ergonomics. Her dedicated work will long be remembered.

Christmas 2015 with my auntie Sue!

I did not know Sue personally, but knew of her through someone very special to me. Sue had such a special way about her, and was such a true gift to those who had the honor of being part of her life. She is greatly missed.

I knew Sue through work on various political campaigns. She was always fun to partner with and had a sharp wit that made the work fun. My condolences to her family and friends.
