It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Svetlana Rubakovic. Dr. Rubakovic passed away on August 22, 2017 surrounded by her children and family, from complications related to cancer.
A pillar of the Coachella Valley community, Dr. Rubakovic possessed an incredible medical acumen and a deeply compassionate personality - she had limitless warmth and energy, and was respected and loved by her patients, friends, and colleagues alike.
Dr. Rubakovic was born October 11, 1960 in Cacak, Serbia to parents Radoslav and Nadezda Rubakovic. She pushed herself to succeed academically, studying abroad in London at the age of 15, eventually graduating from the University of Belgrade Medical School in 1985 and immigrating to the United States shortly thereafter in 1986. She went on to complete her residency at UCLA in 1994 while pregnant with triplets, using the 6 months of mandatory hospital bed-rest to study for her medical boards.
Dr. Rubakovic began her career as a physician in the Coachella Valley with Desert Medical group. She ran her own private practice, Mirage Medical Group & Advanced Skin Care Spa, independently since 2004.
In the free time she had between being a physician and raising a set of hyperenergetic triplets, she volunteered as the Clinical Director of the Melanoma Project at the Genetic Research Institute of the Desert, presenting her findings at various conferences all around the world. Australia was a favorite destination of hers.
Always striving to better herself, Dr. Rubakovic went on to complete a Fellowship in Dermatology, a Masters of Medicine in Skin Cancer, and a post-graduate fellowship in Dermoscopy, while also serving in her role as President of the American Association of Physician Specialties.
Despite her numerous accomplishments as a physician, Dr. Rubakovic's proudest achievement was raising her triplets: Sabrina, Aziz, and Anastasia, as a single mother, with the significant help of Grandma Nada and Grandpa Raki who left their jobs in Serbia as soon as they were born, Uncle Zoran who was dedicated to supporting his sister after all she had done to help raise him, Aunt Zaklina who was more than a sister to her and like a second mom to her children, as well as innumerable dear friends in the community. Always expressing through her words and actions the imperative to be the best that they can be, her children have been left deeply and profoundly instilled with the sense that they can achieve anything that they set out to do, and with the enduring awareness that they are forever loved.
The triplets went on to university at 15 years old. Anastasia is studying to be a doctor like her mother, while Sabrina is completing her Master's at Duke University. Aziz is taking mom's advice of going to graduate school in Public Policy, and using what he learns to "make the world a better place." They will strive to continue her legacy as best as she taught them.
She is also survived by her mother, Nadezda Rubakovic, brother, Zoran Rubakovic, and sister-in-law, Zaklina Rubakovic.
A visitation will be held at St. George Orthodox Church on Friday September 8th from 5-8pm
The service will be held at St. George Orthodox Church on Saturday September 9th from 8:00-9:30 am.
A public celebration of life will be held at the San Jacinto Ballroom of the JW Marriot on Saturday, September 9th, from 10:00am - 2:00 pm.
Visitors are encouraged to speak and share memories of Dr. Rubakovic.

I still remember her voice, intelligence, beauty and charm... at the various dermatology medical meetings we attended over the years. Life with its various twists and turns, I wish I had known she was ill to comfort in some way, I always thought she would be there... both as friend and colleague.
We discussed Yugoslavia's downfall over lunch years ago. Over dinner at our last meeting, she shared that me she had taken her children to Mauna Loa Observatory for a tour to inspire them. My last memory is giving her a good-bye embrace before she left in her Escalade. I always thought she would be around for many many years. I am grateful for the friendship and discussions we shared, yet saddened I could not be there in some way to say a heartfelt final good-bye to my Serbian friend. My warmest regards to her family...

Your daughter, your mother, your friend, Svetlana Rubakovic, was a brilliant woman whose achievements in her field will be sorely missed by the world. But for me, as a patient, I will miss her compassion, her aptitude, attention to detail and mad deft skills. She was a blessing to me, then my parents, treating both for severe skin cancers as they suffered with Alzheimer's/dementia too. She hated causing them pain when they couldn't comprehend the procedures, though I think my dad would have done anything for the beautiful lady doctor; he couldn't express it, but his eyes would light up! Dr. Svetlana, thank you for that sweet memory and all your kindnesses. I miss you. Family, be proud of your mom, she was already an angel among us.

Dr. Rubakovic was wonderful in every way. She cared for my husband and I attribute her skills in early diagnosis of squamous cell ca. She was not only extremely skilled at her specialty she was personable speaking of her daughters of whom she was so proud and her high-endurance hikes in the Palm Desert trails. She had a way if putting her patients at ease for any procedure. As an RN I also had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Rubakovic practice at EMC; she was without a doubt the best dermatologist I've ever known she was a wonderful human being; she will be missed.

She even helped my dad, while he was in town, after he had a surgery that had caused a rash on his body. She brought him in immediately and helped him. Svetlana was our friend and internist and dermatologist and landlord. She was also the devoted doctor of my mother who made it past 100 with her devoted help. We enjoyed the times she came to Idyllwild and hiked with larry. Virginia valued the personal chats we had at the end of doctor visits. To say nothing of the great family parties we were able to attend. We felt a kinship to the Serbian family. And a penchant for mom's baklava, the best we have ever found worldwide. We will truly treasure those times and miss her greatly.

We are so sad to learn of the passing of Dr Rubakovic. She was a wonderful physician and most caring when I went through my cancer. She will be gravely missed.

I will miss everything about Svetlana. She did so much for my family( my in laws, my mom and dad, my 5 daughters, my husband, and myself). She was always the best! So loving. She took care of us all always. She diagnosed so many things that no one else could. She spoiled us all. I ( and my family) will miss her more than I can say.

I love her so much. Not just my boss, I thought of her as family. She did so much for others including myself. So smart and passionate about what she did. I saw it everyday, her wisdom in action. So many I have spoken to say "she saved my life". We all here miss her terribly. We have lost a wonderful person, friend, and physician.

I am so sad to learn of the passing of Dr. Rubakovic. She was such a delightful lady, an extremely caring and competent doctor, and a very good friend. She was so good to my husband during his extended illness. I enjoyed hearing about her children, and she was always interested in ours. The community has lost a wonderful productive, and intelligent doctor. My condolences to all of her family. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

We were so sad to hear of her passing. She was such a kind, energetic and great cook. When we first moved to the desert she would have us over for dinner and the triplets were tiny children, and I remember her getting the puppies! She supported my husbands practice very early on when he was first starting and we will never forget her! May she rest in peace!

Svetlana was a dear friend & colleague. She was always so exuberant, radiating her warmth and energy to everyone she encountered. She is dearly missed, but will live on in our hearts.
