I didn't know Tanner too well, but we did know each other by being internet friends. We followed each other for years on social media, and bonding over music. A specific band that we both really liked was Phoenix, and I remember thinking this dude is really cool. He had such a welcoming and comforting energy, even though I never met him in person I could feel this. He was a really great person, and I just found out about his passing today. I saw his Instagram account and thought that I hadn't heard from him in awhile. We were the same age, I'm also the oldest sibling, in ways we were a lot alike. I can't imagine the heartache and the holes in the lives of his family, and I hope they have healed all that they can. My condolences to everyone who knew him, he was a bright and free spirit and the kindest boy. I didn't know if I should even write this, if it was my place or not, but he should be celebrated no matter what, because he was a light in my life even if just online or text. Rest In Peace Tanner, I hope you're listening to all of your favorite music and skating around wherever you are.

The Smith family-
I am so sorry for your unimaginable loss. I vividly remember Tanner as a little boy in Boy Scouts and classmates with my brother, Chase. He was always such a good friend to him and Spencer and Kelly, you were always a family that I fondly remembered as being kind to everyone at Oakwood including myself and my family. I am praying for peace and healing during this difficult time. Know that he will be with you forever. Xo

Though words are so inadequate in this time of loss many come to mind as I think of your family:
Faithful Loving Generous Fiercely Loyal Momma Daddy Brother Sister
Those of us that have the privilege of knowing you get to see these attributes in action and are blessed by them. You are a shining example to many, and now it is our turn to get to hold you during this time of great grief. How I wish I could remove this pain from your cup and fill it with reassurance and joy. Kelly, I'm here to hand you a tissue, be a listening ear and bathe your family in prayer. With much love

I only hung out with Tanner a handful of times, but I loved the way talking to him made me feel. He would talk excitedly about his goals, and all the fun events he had lined up for himself. He was the kind of person who could really make you feel special, just by spending a few minutes of his time with you. He was well liked by his classmates, his friends, and he had awesome talent when it came to his artwork. Tanner has been in a couple of my dreams since he has passed, and I haven't been able to get him off of my mind. It has been awhile since we had connected, and I regret that. I think of my dreams as a sign that he is at peace now. I am keeping his family and loved ones in my prayers. Even though Tanner and I were't super close, he did touch my heart tremendously.

Spencer, Kelly, and family: I think about your family constantly and how incredible you all are, individually and the loving family that I have grown to love. I have enjoyed getting to know each of you in and out of the office where we first met. Kelly I adore you so and Spencer you are always one to jump in and help anyone in need, I appreciate and love you all. My first memories of Tanner were of me having to move my car out of the driveway because I always stayed longer than planned when coming over to visit and he had to leave for work :) He was so responsible and delightful every time we crossed paths. Then, him coming to work for BHG and him taking over our 3D Tours for us, is not an easy task I'm sure! He handled and delivered his jobs for me so graciously and with such generous accommodations to my forever changing schedules in a way I will always remember him so fondly. Words can express how much your family means to me or the heartache I know you all have with such an amazing soul gone so soon. I know Your Faith and Unity will carry you through the toughest of times and you will grow stronger as you know have the biggest Angel anyone here can ever receive. He is forever with you, in heart, spirit and waiting for your hugs in heaven where you will reunite again. Love Staci

To my first love & forever love, Tanner Smith. When I met Tanner I was going through one of the hardest times of my life and with so much grace and patience he helped me heal. Although our relationship ended before I moved away for college, our friendship never did. Tanner and I were always inseparable, a connection I will never be able to put into words. Although life sometimes drew us apart we always had a mutal love and respect for each other. Just weeks before his passing, we spoke on the phone and told each other how much we missed each other. My heart is broken for Kelly, Spencer, Payton and Cassidy whom were all such a huge part of raising his beautiful soul. He may not be here physically but his sweet and contagious smile and spirit will always be. I love you Tanner, always have and always will. May you rest now. I know you're srill with us. I'll see you soon

Spencer and Kelly: We are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers. Words of comfort are hard to find. I pray that your memories of life with your beautiful son, bring you peace. words from Richard Hooker, British theologian: "Think of your child then, not as dead, but as living; not as a flower that has withered, but as one that is transplanted, and touched by a Divine hand blooming in richer colors and sweeter shades than those of earth."

Tanner was an amazing boy with a beautiful heart. He never failed to put the biggest smile on my face, even in my hardest moments. He always helped me conquer my deepest battles. And his love will always be with you and those who love him. I am deeply sorry for your loss. He truly was a blessing, he touched the hearts of those around him in every moment.

The last time I saw Tanner, which was right around Thanksgiving, we talked about music, his job, his excitement for his new apartment, school, among other things. It was the longest conversation we had. He listened intently, cracked jokes, had insight, and was completely engaged the whole time. I couldn't help but notice how much he had grown as a person since the last time I saw him. Seeing him developing into the young man he was becoming is a testament to how well Spencer and Kelly raised him and the values they instilled him with. Losing him so young with so much potential is not only a tragic loss for his family and friends, but also for society as a whole. Rest in peace Tanner.

I had the pleasure of administering a personality test to Tanner in 2018, one that helps identify a persons' natural abilities, preferences, and helps with career exploration. Prior to the day we met to go through his test results, Tanner and I hadn't spent much time together. I am so thankful that I had the chance to get to know Tanner, to discuss his strengths, passions, interests, and dreams for his future. Tanner was a truly unique and gifted young man, and I feel truly blessed that I had the chance to spend some quality time getting to know him.
All of our thoughts and prayers are with those who knew and loved Tanner...

Spencer, Kelly, Payton, Cassidy and entire Smith family...here's the Light amongst your current sorrow...God, the Creator of the universe, sent His only Son Christ Jesus to walk among us and show the world what it was like to be pure of heart, loving to all and sinless. God also knew man needed a Savior and His Son is our Savior and God also knew His Son would be crucified so man can be saved from our sins. We don't always understand God's plan...even Jesus didn't understand His Father's plan, as Jesus cried out to His Father from the cross my God, my God, why have You forsaken Me? It wasn't until Jesus stood beside His Father in Heaven did He understand God's plan.
Two of my beautiful sisters have lost sons too soon and while their heartache and your heartache may never subside, it's that very heartache God has for ALL of His children and rest assured God prepared a special place in Heaven for Tanner and Tanner is literally in the presence of our Creator God and His Son Christ Jesus. That's the incredibly good news during this time of sorrow. Gone from Earth, but home in Heaven and never ever forgotten. God bless Tanner and God bless entire Smith family

We Smith's come from a long line of strength Some times that strength is tested We always come through somehow or another. We are divided into two groups. Heaven has some of us while the earth holds the others. Foremost we all reunite and see each other once again. I live every day knowing that we will have both worlds but only one at a time.

I do not know the emptiness you must feel, yet you share your thoughts so meaningfully. Your faith is clear and your strength astounding. I feel for all who knew and loved your son, but to you, his parents, who nurtured and loved this beautiful soul, I hope you feel him and see him in all that is around you, until you reunite again. Much love and strength to you.

Tanner, I still cannot believe you are gone but I value all our memories and our friendship. I remember meeting you at Olympus during P.E., you were my dance partner and I remember you made me laugh consistently. You were an amazing friend and skater! Those days after school at the skate park with our group of friends seem like it was just yesterday. I will miss you dearly and I wish I was able to say goodbye one last time. Rest In Peace angel, you were the light in many of our lives and you've created a mark in our hearts so we will never forget that warm, comforting smile of yours <3 Celebrating your life is a must, though we may be sad I know you would want your family and friends to smile and just remember the amazing memories with you.

I remember that Tanner made friends easily in is first year at Olympus, which was also his first year in Granite Bay. He was a neat kid, a leader. He is a kid we would have recruited to be a WEB Leader if WEB had been around at the time. I know from his classmates that he continued to be kind and thoughtful, reaching out to others with an offer of friendship when others needed that. I think of him with warmth in my heart and such sadness at his untimely death. Blessings upon you Tanner. Blessings upon your family.
