Thomas Doorly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 2, 2019.
A life well lived…. A person well loved

Dr. Thomas J. Doorly peacefully went to his heavenly home on Feb. 2, 2019 at West Shore Pinnacle Hospital.

Dr. Doorly was a pediatrician with Carlisle Pediatrics for 20 years before going into solo practice for the next 15 years. He loved his "kids" and is best remembered for his drawings of Sesame Street characters on tongue blades. Balloons saying "When you're feeling poorly, See Dr. Doorly" were also a frequent handout.

Surviving is his wife, Beverly, and children, Tom Doorly (Rosie) Pottsville, Jane Rogalewicz (Joseph) Downingtown, Erin Kirkpatrick (Tom) Gardners and Ryan Osborn Mt. Holly Springs. Tom…better known as "Poppy" …leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was an encourager to each of them….Poppy will be missed! Tom was the youngest of three brothers and is survived by his brother David (Anne) of Medford, NJ and was preceded in death by brother Peter (Joan) of Long Beach Island, NJ.

Dr. Doorly attended Mount St. Mary's College where he graduated with highest honors receiving his diploma from President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He attended Thomas Jefferson University for his medical degree. Tom also served as a Captain in the United States Army.

During the time of his solo practice Dr. Doorly was on call 24 / 7. He wanted to be able to respond quickly to any medical needs "his kids" might have. Interest in collecting medical and baby antiques became his passion in addition to gardening. We lovingly referred to his antique collection as the "Doorly Museum". Gardening was in his soul. Over the years he propagated boxwoods and had several varieties of hollies in his backyard. A woodland garden soon took shape. Tom loved giving garden tours and naming all the plants. When you left his garden you always had a plant or two going with you. During his final days he was giving instructions on who got what plant and how to dig it up. He always worried when Bev had her garden clippers in hand.

Dr. Doorly was a member of Middlesex United Methodist Church and was involved with Congregational Care and Golden Lights Ministries. He loved going to church and giving his special friends those big hugs. He was loved by his church family for sure.

Tom was also a member of the Gideons Cumberland Central of Pennsylvania where he served as Camp Vice President. He was active in helping distribute Gideon Bibles to colleges, schools and on Jubilee Day.
Please join his family for a celebration of Dr. Doorly's life on Saturday February 23rd 11am at Middlesex United Methodist Church, 118 North Middlesex Road Carlisle with Pastor Kevin Hughes officiating.

I just heard of Dr. Doorly's passing this past weekend. I had worked pediatrics at the Carlisle Hospital 40+ years ago and enjoyed working with him. He was, also, both my childrens' pediatrician. You have my deepest sympathy. Sincerely, Nina Berrier

Sorry for the loss of Thomas. I didn't know him personally but we communicated back and forth over e-mail. I purchase some of his baby and feeding collection. This sparked interesting conversations with him. My thoughts are with your family.
