Thomas DUFFY Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2021.
DUFFY, Thomas Aquinas Jr. "Tom" of Queens County, New York and New Port Richey, Florida died February 3, 2021, at the age of 80, at his home in Florida. Thomas, a quiet, low key and generous man, was much beloved by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cornelia Hamill Duffy; his three daughters, Christine, Erinn (Patrick Flanagan) and Susan (Charles Dora); his five grandchildren, Izabel, Thomas, Madelaine, Devin and Aidan; his brother, John; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Edmund Charles in 2019. Thomas was born July 12, 1940, to the Honorable and Mrs. Thomas A. Duffy of Jackson Heights, Queens County, New York. He was a graduate of Fordham University and Fordham Law School and served as a Captain in the United States Army in the infantry division in Korea, before embarking on his legal career. Thomas began his work in public service as a Queens County Assistant District Attorney where he subsequently rose to the position of Chief of the Appeals Bureau. In 1981, Thomas was sworn in as Special Prosecutor for the City of New York to investigate corruption in the criminal justice system. In 1985, Governor Mario Cuomo proposed Thomas as the Commissioner and Chairman of the New York State Liquor Authority, describing him as a "law enforcement official of impeccable credentials." As Commissioner, Thomas would jokingly describe his position to his friends as "keeping thirsty New Yorkers happy." Thomas eventually left public service and engaged as an attorney in the private practice of law until his retirement and relocation to Florida two years ago. He was an enthusiastic golfer, especially later in life, and loved playing golf with his wife, children, grandchildren and many dear friends. Throughout his distinguished career and in his personal life, he had the exceptional ability to make real and lasting connections with people. Loyal, loving and supportive husband and father, proud grandfather, great father-in-law, wonderful son and brother, Thomas was truly one of life's finest gentlemen. His generous smile, humble nature, quick witted sense of humor and kind heart made him a profoundly special person who will be dearly missed.

Called Tom at the Liquor Department. Told secretary I was a friend. "Yeah right" she says. I rattle off St Joan of Arc Fordham Jackson Heights Hawks hockey his brother and father. She laughs and apologizes says "Do you know how many people claim to be Tom´s "friend?"

Not a day goes by that we don't think of you. This last year has been a sad one but we always tell stories of all the funny things you said and did when we are together. You were the best man, husband, father, brother and son. They broke the mold after you Dad. I was beyond blessed to have you for 50 years.

Tom and I played baseball & hockey & softball together. He was a fabulous catcher with a killer arm and the center on the Jackson Heights Hawks. Tom was my ROTC buddy at Fordham and taught me how to drive in his dads black Buick. Smart classy guy and a great friend.

I was saddened to learn of Tom's passing which was noted in the Fordham Magazine. May you all be comforted by lasting happy memories of this fine and gentle man. The last time I saw Tom was at his brother Ed's funeral in NYC, October 2019. A sad moment made brighter by Tom's cheerful recollections of his brother. Rest easy Tom.

Tom is as good a man as I have ever known. Words like honorable, strong, caring and loyal are not powerful enough to describe the magnitude of these traits in him. His greatness as a lawyer are outshined by his stature as a human being. He was my dear friend for more than a half century and I will miss him a lot.

Miss you so much Dad. Never met a person who was more patient or more loved by so many people. You were kind to everyone. You were one in a million and we were beyond blessed to call you ours. Your four girls love you and miss you.

Tom was a lifelong colleague and friend. He was among the finest lawyers I’ve ever know in my nearly 50 years of legal practice. He was also kind and compassionate; he was a true gentleman. My deepest and most heartfelt condolences go to Connie and the rest of his family. May his memory be a blessing.
