Thomas Dungan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2018.
Thomas E. Dungan

Bossier City - Thomas E. Dungan was born on July 19, 1957 in Indianapolis, IN. Now on January 8, 2018, he has celebrated his heavenly birthday. A celebration of Tom's life will be Thursday, January 11, at 10am at Asbury United Methodist Church (UMC) in Bossier City with Rev. Jerry Hilbun and Rev. Jack Odell officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 10, from 5pm - 8pm at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home in Haughton.

Tom married the woman of his dreams, Susan Masters, and they have loved life to the fullest while faithfully serving God for more than 30 years. Tom began his career as a Tool and Die Machinist in 1977 and worked at AT&T and Beaird Poulan Weedeater.

Tom answered his call to serve God in ministry in 2006. Brother Tom has touched so many lives through his ministry as: Senior Pastor at Haughton UMC, and now Fellowship UMC. He also served a two-point charge for a short period of time as Associate Pastor of North Highlands UMC.

Tom has a passion for mission and served as the district coordinator for UM Volunteers in Mission. However, his heart and love was working alongside his dear friend (his buddy) Bob Dykes, as the coordinators of Shreveport District Wheelchair Ramp ministry providing ramps for those in need.

Tom was the Spiritual Director for Cross Bayou Walk to Emmaus. This is a 3 day spiritual formation retreat intended to strengthen the leadership within the local church and this was the tool God used to open Tom's heart to the call on his life into ministry.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Susan; their son, Stephen Lee Dungan and wife, Britney; and grandchildren, Brooks, Tommy and Logan. Tom was joined into the Masters family 30 years ago - he has never referred to them as in-laws, they are equally his parents, brothers and sisters: Paula Masters Cantrell Hassell and husband Jack; his siblings; Steve, Thomas, Teresa, Carrie and their spouses; Susie, Kathy, Terese and Greg. Tom is preceded in death by his parents Betty Fullen Dungan and Thomas Bruce Dungan and his son Thomas Michael Dungan.

The family would like to thank the medical team at Willis Knighton Bossier and Willis Knighton North for the impeccable care and compassion shown during Tom's illness: Dr. SanPedro, Dr. A. Barz, Dr. R. Bryn, Dr. C. Prejean and a host of Respiratory Therapist, and Nurses. These teams not only practiced with the highest level of integrity but also made evident their faith in God. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. M. Futrell who walked this road with Susan as not only her friend through Tom's illness, but also as her partner in Cardiology for the last 5 years. Words will never adequately express the love and appreciation felt.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to Fellowship UMC Building Fund, 4750 Barksdale Blvd, Bossier City, LA 71112. Tom had a vision and had begun the process to build a much needed Fellowship Hall to serve as a Youth Wing, a new kitchen for the learning center and had plans to host mission teams in this area.

Tom was a Bible scholar and teacher - one of his favorite verses is Matthew 5:6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled". If he were here today - he would say - "Open your hearts to the powerful Word of God".

Susan, it was with great sadness I learned of Tom's death today from our old friend, Chuck Stripling. You don't know me, but Tom, Chuck and I grew up together on Poinsettia Drive, and I have a lot of fond memories of those years (it is a miracle we never fell out of his tree house and broke our necks). I have always wondered over the years how Tom was doing, and I was glad to hear about the positive impact he had on many lives.

I am so saddened by the loss of another friend. Susan, I am so sorry for the loss of your best friend and husband. I am praying for you and all the people that loved Tom!! He is in Heaven talking to Durrell. I can only imagine what they are talking about, but I bet it is a talk about how they love God and are blessed to be at their eternal home. Diane Effinger Reiland

Teresa & Terese & All of Brother Tom's Family,
Although we did not know Tom personally, reading his story, the Scripture so obviously popped out: "They asked each other, 'Didn't our hearts burn within us as [Jesus] talked with us on the Road [to Emmaus] (Luke 24:32) So, as one who was open to the Holy Spirit of Love & Life, Tom's spiritual eyes were opened as he was given the Gift that would bring fulfillment to his mission in life. God loved Tom so much that he was also blessed with the greatest two partners in the world to help him reach "the Goal set before him." His wife Susan & his other best friend, Bob Dykes. On top of that were a son and grandchildren! It just doesn't get any better than that in this life! What an outstanding witness to the Power of allowing God's Will to direct one's life!
It has to be so sad to lose such a brother, but so phenomenal knowing who he was and is in God's Kingdom! Shalom! Susan & Jane

Tom visited with my father, Elvin Mellinger, on so many occasions during his stay in retirement homes and during Dad's hospital stays. Tom meant so much to Dad and words can never express our gratitude for this endearing friendship. Luke 22: 24-30 I am among you as one who serves.
To the family, I am so sorry for your loss. I pray that you will find comfort and peace.
