Thomas Hampton Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 17, 2025.
Thomas "Tom" Cooper Hampton, Jr. of Frankfort, Kentucky, passed away on February 15, 2025, after a long struggle with cancer. Tom was born at the Air Force Hospital in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on September 12, 1945, to Thomas Cooper Hampton and Estelle Louise Weeks Hampton. Tom grew up in Louisville and was a member of the Class of 1963 at Seneca High School, where he played baseball and football and bass drums in the marching band. He was voted "Most Mischievous" by his senior-year classmates. Tom served four years in the United States Air Force and was involved in military photo intelligence. Upon completion of his military duties, Tom earned his degree in accounting from Western Kentucky University in 1972 and immediately went to work for the Legislative Research Commission of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, where he spent his entire 50+ years career; he was elected to the state government employee Alumni Staff Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Frankfort Country Club, where he served as a director. He served on the board of directors of the Grand Theatre in Frankfort. His lifelong hobby was playing golf, including having made a hole-in-one at the Frankfort Country Club and Myrtle Beach and as a volunteer for many of the Ryder Cup Matches.

Tom is survived by his daughter, Gina Courtney Hampton Greathouse of Lexington; his son, CAPT Fred Holcombe, Jr. (Wendy), Oceanside, California; his two grandsons, William and Brent Holcombe, stepson, Houston Barber; his stepdaughter, Carrie Barber Jewkes. His sister Ellen "Lynn" Hampton and her husband Dennis Auld, his brother John Weeks Hampton and his wife Maria Imorde Gerwing Hampton and his brother James "Beau" Hampton, and cousins and nieces

The family wants to thank the doctors and employees at the University of Kentucky Hospital for their expertise in Tom's treatments. We also thank the employees and Hospice personnel at the Bluegrass Care and Rehabilitation Center in Lexington for caring for him so lovingly in his final days. Tom also received excellent care from Dominion, Frankfort Regional Medical Center, and Signature of Georgetown. Thanks to all of you for caring and understanding Tom's humor. The family also would like to express their appreciation to Tom's friends who continually visited him over the past two years at his home, hospitals, and nursing homes.

The family prefers that, in lieu of flowers and gifts, donations be made in his memory to the

UK HealthCare Department of Urology Resident Research and Education Fund, PO Box 910628, Lexington, KY 40591-0628; Grand Theatre, 210 Washington St., Frankfort, KY 40601; or Josephine Sculpture Park, 3355 Lawrenceburg Rd., Frankfort, KY 40601.

Tom was wonderful. We met him at the gym when we moved to KY in 2017. Did a lot of spin classes together. He was a great guy and a character and we miss him.

In the days before digital photography I photographed the birth of my niece in low light conditions. The black and white images were difficult to read. Tom helped out, taking me into his dark room and showing me how to bring these images to life. This was typical of him. He was generous, fun loving, goofy, and sometimes edgy. I always enjoyed seeing Tom, and although we fell out of touch, my recollections of his unique personality and great energy are cherished.
