Thomas Marshall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 25, 2024.
Thomas Marshall, age 36, of Titusville, FL, passed away unexpectedly on October 30, 2024.

Tom was born on June 25, 1988, in Sonora, CA. He later moved to Northampton, MA where he attended Northampton Public Schools through his graduation in 2007. Growing up, Tom enjoyed hobbies like soccer, paintball, football, lacrosse, weightlifting, fishing, camping, video games, and continuously getting into shenanigans. One of the most memorable things about him was how he always brought a smile to many of his classmates' faces, which is echoed across the many posts that outpoured to him after the news of his untimely passing.

After graduation, he went on to join the United States Marine Corps as a CH-53 Helicopter Airframe Mechanic. Tom enlisted in the Marine Corps with eight of his classmates also entering the armed forces in various branches. This was the largest group from Northampton High School to join the military in over 30 years. Tom served from June 2007 to November 2012 out of MCAS Miramar San Diego, CA where he was attached to HMH1-466. During his enlistment, he was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (3rd award); Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2nd award); Iraq Campaign Medal (2nd award); Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Navy Unit Commendation (2nd award); Certificate of Commendation (individual award); Certificate of Appreciation (2nd award); NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan; Letter of Appreciation (4th award); and Expert Rifle Badge (3rd award). Tom served his country honorably advancing to the rank of E5, Sergeant and was very proud of his military service. If there was one thing that defined Tom, it was his service to and love for his country.

After being honorably discharged from the USMC, he moved to Florida with close friends to attend college. He worked as an Aircraft Mechanic at Epic Flight Academy in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Tom enjoyed all outdoor activities that Florida had to offer, some of which included shooting, biking, kayaking, and saltwater fishing.

Every year, for 11 years consecutively, he traveled north to Maine to be with a group of people that blurred the line between family and friends, a trip he looked forward to each year. Tom spent many nights camped by the riverbank of the Penobscot River in his tent even after tent camping was not necessary. During his trips, he spent time fishing, kayaking, bigfoot hunting, cutting down trees, enjoying the magic of campfire, good friends, and big skies. Through the years, Tom and his friends, each left their mark everywhere in so many ways as the property turned from woods to "camp". Maine was his paradise, and he loved being there; it brought him inner peace and happiness. With every sunrise, campfire, camp shenanigan, float downs on the Penobscot, as well as all the improvements he helped along the way, his presence will always be felt at camp.

Tom was loyal. Tom always made sure he was present for all the important milestones in his loved one's lives. He was attentive, thoughtful, caring, and was loved by all animals and people whose paths he crossed. He would have your back, even if you were in the wrong, even if to a fault. Tom inspired those around him, and his brother Andrew followed in his footsteps by enlisting in the USMC after his own high school graduation. Tom was funny. He will always be remembered for his antics, unique mannerisms, numerous inside jokes, iconic sayings, and the love he showed for those in his life. He will be missed dearly by his loving mother.

Thomas is predeceased by his father Gary Marshall, aunts Ellen Perrier and Sharon Dunn, uncle Michael Dunn Jr., and grandfathers Michael Dunn and Clarence Lemke. Thomas is survived by his mother Barbara Dunn Marshall, his brother Andrew Marshall, aunts and uncles Marianne and Bob Foote, Joanne and Dan O'Connor, Maureen and Bob Moses, Brian Dunn, Joyce Michael, John Dunn, Corina Marshall, grandmother Rita Bibeau Dunn Lemke, as well as some close loved ones that Tom considered family, Jonathan and Angela Plassmann, Daniel Dion and Megan Kim and their children Fynn and Eden Dion, Colin and Elana Abbatessa, Michael Clements, and Ryan Schirch.

A service with military honors will be held at Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA, on December 6th at 0900. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation

Tom was the guy you hoped was with you when things needed to get done because you knew he had your back. We were in Afghanistan as part of a smaller group to assist with asset turn over to relieve the current squadron. It was cold as hell with snow everywhere. Tom and I got our butts ripped by our Sergeant for something I can't remember. What I do remember is Tom's sense of humor after that. We walked up and down that flight line in the snow and couldn't feel our toes or fingers, but we were cracking jokes the entire time. Maybe it was trauma bonding, who knows haha. Tom said something and it made us laugh so hard that we were crying. The kind of hard laugh that makes you cough and have a runny nose toward the end. That's what I'll remember. When I think of Tom, every memory I have are filled with jokes, laughter and smiles. It pains me to think that he's gone.

Thank you Tom for your friendship, the memories and brotherhood. You were a big part of my small circle that kept me going back then.

Til Valhalla brother

I was a flight student at Epic Flight Academy and got a part-time job working in the maintenance hanger while I was attending flight training. That is where I met Tom. Like him, I am also a USMC veteran, so Tom and I hit it off immediately. I ALWAYS enjoyed his company and our time together working at Epic. Although I only worked with Tom on/off for a few months, he really made an impression on me. He was always funny, was quick witted, and always on the lookout to make everyone laugh. In many ways he was like a character in your favorite comedy movie. My GF came to visit me in FL, late summer of 2023, and I wanted to show her where I was working while attending flight training. I took her to the hanger and while I wanted her to meet everyone, I especially wanted her to meet Tom. He was truly a special person, a special man. I was shocked to learn of his passing, and wish I could have had one more conversation with him! Tom, wherever you are, you are missed my friend.

Barb,
I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Thomas. You and Andrew are in my thoughts and prayers. I always enjoyed when you would take a moment to share with me about your boys when were working at JFK together. You would always have a smile and laugh when talking about Thomas. Wishing you peace.

Barbara and Andrew: I read this sad news
I know your heart must ache for such a difficult loss. I remember us spending time after school at Bridge Street, watching our kids (Iz, Andrew, Thomas) play in the yard. He got a lot of life into his 3 years and I hope he rests in peace and you both find some as well.

I'll never forget laying the floor of my house at midnight with Tom after he filled the house with smoke trying to make bagel bites. We both laughed until it hurt. That was how it was with him a lot. Absolutely crazy, but joyous and unforgettable.
