Thomas McCue Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2017.
Thomas Edward McCue III died on August 19, 2017, in Williamsburg, Va., following a brief illness.
He was born at Bryn Mawr Hospital on March 18, 1948, to Thomas Edward McCue Jr. and Mildred Teal McCue and was raised Glen Mills, Pennsylvania. He was baptized at St. Thomas the Apostle church, Chester Heights, Pa. The McCue family were founding members of the parish, which was formed in 1851. He attended high school at Archmere Academy, graduating in 1966.
He matriculated at Siena College, Albany, N.Y., and later received a BA in philosophy from Temple University in 1971. He entered the MBA program at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, Va., in 1977. While there, he met his wife, Melissa Rhodes of Richmond Va. They were married in 1979 in Richmond, Virginia.
He received a PhD in finance at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1983, and following graduation was an assistant professor of finance at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia (1983-1985) and later associate professor of finance in the Department of Business Administration, at George Washington University.
In 1989, he began his twenty-seven-year career at the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business, Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. At Duquesne, he taught courses in corporate finance and security analysis and was active in his department. He served as president of the faculty senate and as chair of the graduate curriculum committee within the School of Business. He served as a mentor and supporter of his younger colleagues as they began their academic careers. He was also the author of numerous articles and contributed to several books.
Tom and Melissa moved to Pittsburgh in 1989, living first in Allison Park and later in Gibsonia, Pa. They were active members of Sts. John and Paul Parish in Sewickley, PA.
Earlier this year, following Tom's retirement from Duquesne, Tom and Melissa moved to Williamsburg, Va., where they celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary in June 2017 during a McCue Family reunion. They also purchased a home in Kill Devil Hills, NC where they had always dreamed of living.
Tom is survived by his wife and three children, Molly of Zionsville, IN, Patrick of Washington, D.C., and Meredith of Arlington, Va. He is also survived by his siblings, Patricia MacLeish of Newport, R.I.; Teresa Frantz of Kennett Square, Pa., Michael J. McCue of Richmond, Va., Richard T. McCue of Glenmore, Pa., and Daniel L. McCue of Kennett Square, Pa., who will all miss his wonderful humor and generosity to them and their children. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Hunter Rhodes, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Olaf's Parish in Williamsburg, VA at 3pm on Friday, August 25th with visitation the hour prior. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville, VA at noon on Saturday the 26th. There will be a memorial service in Pittsburgh at a later date.

Dear McCue family, I am so very saddened to hear of Tom's passing. I was part of his earlier life in Delaware county: in grade school with him at St. Thomas the Apostle (where he also was an altar boy), worked summers along side of him on several projects mostly at Dougherty's, went to high school at Archmere with him as well; there he was pretty famous for his theater acting skills and his wit. He seemed to know everybody. He was always fun to be with, smiling and telling stories, and he was very tuned into the music and dance scene in those days. Though I hadn't seen him in many years, I happened to speak with him last summer as part of getting ready for our 50th Archmere reunion; as always he was very kind and thoughtful.
He was a wonderful person and a friend, and I will miss him.
My deepest sympathies to all his family. Jack Brooks

Dear Melissa,

I am so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. He was a great mentor to me and I owe a lot of my success in my career and life in general to him. Frances and I were honored to have both of you at our wedding 22 years ago. Please know that we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

Molly, Patrick, and Meredith, your dad will be missed by all of us in the Duquesne family. He was great guy to be around both in and out of the classroom. So very sorry for your loss.

Tom was an outstanding faculty member at Duquesne. He was a great teacher and scholar. He represented the faculty effectively as its president. He worked constantly to improve the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business. He embodied the Spiritan mission of Duquesne. The opportunity to work with Tom was among the highlights of my presidency.
I am proud to say Tom was my friend. I express my condolences to his family and offer prayers for the salvation he so richly merits.

Dear Melissa and family. I cannot begin to find the words to express my sadness at this time. I so looked forward to spending time with both of you in Kill Devil Hills reminiscing those early days when Melissa and I met at Northmont Church. Then Tom's kind and welcomed mentoring when I joined the faculty at Duquesne's School of Business. Duquesne University is mourning a great role model, teacher and faculty leader. Melissa I look forward to spending retirement time in Virginia and NC with you! Lots of Love, Amy Phelps

We are so sorry for your loss. It has been many years since we played together in Glen Mills. We have wished many times that we could all get together like "the good old days" when we had fun together. We kept up with you all with your mom when she visited our mom and dad until she passed. Maybe one day we can get together in memory of all who have passed. Again we very sorry for your loss. Nancy and Janice

Melissa and family,
This prayer from St. Francis de Sales has always comforted me during the lost of a loved one. I hope it will give you comfort as well...

Do not look with fear
on the changes and chances of this life;
rather look to them with full faith that as they arise,
God whose you are will deliver you out of them.

He has kept you hitherto.
Do not but hold fast to His dear hand,
and He will lead you safely through all things;
and when you cannot stand, He will bear you
in His arms.

Do not anticipate what will happen tomorrow.
The same everlasting Father who cares for you today
will take care of you tomorrow and every day.
Either He will shield you from suffering or
He will give you unfailing strength to bear it.

Be at peace, then, and put aside all anxious thoughts
and imaginations.

- St. Francis de Sales

I have been blessed to know Tom and Melissa McCue- their friendship has been a gift. Tom was a generous and kind man, talented in his field by his many accomplishments. To me, his greatest accomplishment was his witness to love in his marriage to Melissa ( and her witness of love to him)- extended to the love for their children. My prayers and sympathies to Melissa, his children and his family.
