Thomas McLAUGHLIN Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 9, 2012.
McLAUGHLIN, Thomas Kesler Jr., noted architect and loving father, friend, husband, brother, died at home January 5, 2012 after two years of treatment for non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was cared for until the end by his son, Tommy; his daughter, Mary Elizabeth; and his wife, Mary. He is survived also by his sister, Katherine Pollard and her husband, Monty Pollard, of Greenville, N.C., among his extended family. Mr. McLaughlin held an undergraduate degree in architecture from North Carolina State University and a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University. In 1983, he became the 100th recipient of the Rotch Traveling Scholarship for architectural design, the oldest award of its kind in the United States. After moving from Boston to Richmond, Va. in 1989, he designed a number of significant new construction projects. Among these are Richmond Newspapers' Production Facilities; HeiligMeyers Corporate Headquarters, St. Francis Cancer Center; the Oliver Hill Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts Building; new courts facilities for Spotsylvania County, Henry County and the City of Hopewell. Traces may be found in these buildings of Mr. McLaughlin's favorite architects, including Willem Marinus Dudok and Frank Lloyd Wright. He also loved researching and designing the reconstruction and renovation of historic structures. In 1986, he won a Massachusetts Governor's Design Award for the Boston Children's Museum and Museum of Transportation on Museum Wharf, a project involving the renovation of an 1890's heavy-timber framed warehouse. Most recently, Mr. McLaughlin served as Principal/Researcher and Architect for Henricus Historical Park. However, it is the Blackfriars Playhouse that Mr. McLaughlin himself regarded as best illustrating his talents. Mr. McLaughlin came to this project after co-founding the Richmond Shakespeare Globe Center with his dear friend Peter Wiggins. The eventual result of their effort, with the help of many others, is the Blackfriars Playhouse, where thousands over the past ten years have experienced Shakespeare's plays in a setting resembling as closely as possible the venue of their original production. Dating from his early days in Tarboro, N.C., where he played quarterback, point guard, and starting pitcher for his high school teams, Mr. McLaughlin was an inveterate sports fan and Wolfpack booster. He rated his greatest personal achievement as "going perfect from the foul line" (4 for 4) in 1968 as a freshman walk on at North Carolina State. A memorial service will be held at the Branch House, 2501 Monument Avenue, Richmond, Va., 23220 on January 10, 2012, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. All who knew or loved Tom are invited to attend and share in his memory. In lieu of flowers, Tom encouraged donations to the American Shakespeare Center, Staunton, Virginia.

Tried to reach Tom to wish him a happy birthday today, and found the sad news instead. Am thinking of Mary. Knew them both in Boston at Dyer/Brown and through Museum of Transportation/ Museum Wharf connections. Glad to reconnect with Tom when I moved to Charlottesville, Va in 2008 and got to see a play at Blackfriars with the man himself. Mary, search on your name leads me to think today might be a doubly hard day for you. I have never met your children, but will keep them in my prayers.

Dear Mary, Tommy and Mary Elizabeth,
Our entire family was so sad to hear of Tom's death. What a kind and gentle man he was, and we always enjoyed seeing him (and all of you) throughout the years. Surely he fought a hard battle and hopefully didn't suffer. He loved you very much and was so very proud of all three of you. God bless you all. Fondly, Meg, Byron, Ben and Sarah Kate Traynham

To the McLaughlin family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. As Mary Lou stated, I knew Tom mostly through Katherines adoration. It is obvious he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. How wonderful though that he could leave such a legacy for others to enjoy for years to come.

Dear McLaughlin Family,
I was genuinely saddened to get a call this morning telling me of Tom's passing. Please accept my deepest condolences. There was never a doubt in my mind after meeting Tom in the halls of THS that he would leave lasting impressions with everyone he met throughout life, wherever life's travels took him. Truly, Tom's bright spirit and body of work live on for those of us fortunate enough to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I worked with Tom in the 90's. Tom worked to his own schedule much to the chagrin of others in the office. Most of his creative work came late at night as he listened to Ted Koppel on Nightline as the rest of us slept. I admired his work and always wished I had half his talent.
I had the great honor and privilege of working on two of his major projects. Years would go between my contacts with Tom but when I saw him it was as if it had only been days. I spent a half hour with him two months ago we caught up on life in general.
Tom will be missed. He was very gentle and I can't recall him ever speaking ill of anyone.
My prayers and condolences are with the family.

To Tom's Family: Tom was in my high school graduating class and I remember him fondly. Please know how deeply sad I am to learn of his passing. He made his mark in high school, and as I can see, all during his life. With deepest sympathy, Mary Earle Nettles Stallings

I will always treasure the fun times and conversations I had with you and Mary, Tommy (Mr. Robusto) and Mary Elizabeth. So witty, smart, and kind, and with all the extraordinary talent you had to offer the world, you are too young to not still be here. I will miss you, Tom, and never forget you. You were always a great brother-in-law and friend.

January 9, 2012

Dear McLaughlin family, I send my deepest condolences. I have fond memories of Tom as a good-looking, smart, athletic and cool senior at Tarboro High when I was a lowly freshman. I knew his parents through the Carolina Telephone Company family and the school system and I taught with Katherine. My thoughts and prayers for comfort and peace are with you. To Tom's wife and children and Katherine and her family,
My prayers go out to your family. I will always remember going over to Katherine's house as a child to play. Katherine always adored her older, cool brother and loved to show him off to her friends when he was around the house. He is in a better place now celebrating with his parents. Skippy, you can love on him once again.

Dear Mclaughlin Family,
I have worked with Tom on various projects over the last 35 years. In each of those instances, I was always impressed with his design talent as an Architect and ability to take an idea and create a lasting architectural statment. Most recently, I was privledged to work with him on several projects at Henricus Park, the latest, Rocke Hall, in a photograph attached to my remarks. His passion was contagious and his demeaner gracious and welcoming. Tom was just good to be around. My thoughts are with you and all who will mourn his passing.

I enjoyed working with Tom for a period of 5 years or so. His design talent raised the bar in our office. Beyond his striking hand drawn building elevation proposals, Tom knew how it would go together, how that image could be achieved. He loved good design, good food and a good ACC matchup. God bless.

January 9, 2012

My sincere condolences to his wife and children. During my time at Odell, I greatly appreciated Toms
easy going approach and his ability to work with the members of his team and his ability to communicate his ideas of design to the others. I believe the healing gardens and the St. Francis Cancer Center are a fitting tribute to his ability. He has brought a lasting memorial to others who are combatting this disease, and hopefully will appreciate his contribution to life as we know it. It is truly a beautiful and healing place.

Tom was a regular attendee at our Monday night basketball at Sacred Heart Church in Newton in the early 80's. It was always fun to have him part of our group. He always had a smile on his face. Please know that Tom and you will be in my prayers.

Dear Mrs. McLaughlin:
It is with great saddness that we at Henricus Historical Park have learned of Tom's passing. Tom was our official town architect and a great friend to all of us. This news comes as a shock. We've lost a beloved and highly respected man whose talents helped transform this important 17th century site for the education and enjoyment of generations to come. Tom will be sorely missed by all associated with Henricus. I counted Tom among my friends and I always enjoyed working and conversing with him. He took a great deal of pride in the work he did for us and we took a great deal of pride in being associated with him. We are truly saddened by his passing. May God bless the McLaughlin family.
Charles Lewis Grant, acting Executive Director, Henricus Historical Park, Chester, VA
