Thomas Richards Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 2, 2024.
Thomas H. Richards was born in Louisville, KY, November 29, 1941. He was the youngest of eight children born to George and Emma Richards. He attended St Helen grade school and graduated from Flaget High School in 1959. He then attended Speed Scientific School at the University of Louisville, graduating with a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering in 1965. Tom began his career at IBM in Lexington, KY. He worked in product development as an engineer and manager for IBM, and later Lexmark, until retiring in 1996. Tom then worked at a high security electronic lock company in Lexington until 2000. After years of travel in retirement, Tom and his wife Sue returned to Louisville in 2015.

Tom is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sue Ann (Kane) Richards. They would have celebrated their 60th Anniversary on July 11th. He is also survived by his five children, Jennifer Dwyer (Jeff), Mary Beth Hall (Duran), Theresia Gussler (Carter), Stephen Richards (Lauren), and Michael Richards (Carrie). He and Sue have ten grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, and Jack Dwyer; Katie and Trey Hall; David, Claire, and Billy Gussler; and Evelyn Walford and Luke Richards.

He is also survived by his brother George Richards, sister Elizabeth Goodin, many cousins, nephews, and nieces, including Ron Richards and Tom Halbleib, who were like brothers to him.

Tom enjoyed playing golf and poker with his friends, traveling to Hilton Head Island, SC with his wife and his children's families, and celebrating birthdays and holidays at big family gatherings.

Tom has elected to be cremated, and his Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St Michael Catholic Church, 3703 Stone Lakes Dr, Louisville, KY 40299. The Mass will be on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 10:00 AM. A celebration of life luncheon will be held after the funeral Mass.

In lieu of flowers, please send expressions of sympathy to St Vincent de Paul Society, where Tom donated much of his time in retirement, or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

When we were teenagers (me 16, Tom 15, Ron 14) Tom´s mom, my Aunt Emma, was keeping a 1950 Chevy for when Tom turned 16, but she would let me drive it when I was staying with them. As soon as we would get to the end of their drive onto Dixie Tom would say it´s my car and I want to drive. It was, so I turned it over to him. He was so used to driving and as we all know so cocky that when he finally turned 16 and took the test for his license he flunked. And, Ron and I never let him forget it. Happy trails my friend.

I still smile at the memories of you cat-napping anywhere and everywhere, even with a room full of people! I can still see you sitting at the top of the stairs to the basement when we all gathered at mom Kane´s house and you would be sleeping! Also, when we were visiting in Lexington and you were in the recliner, sleeping, and went to cross your leg and ended up on the floor with the recliner on top of you! We do have great memories of all of our times together. You were a great husband, father, grandfather, and brother......we love you! May you be at peace and pain-free
