Thomas Vana Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 11, 2024.
Thomas Donald Vana, 86, passed away on October 28, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona. Born on July 15, 1938, Thomas, affectionately known as Tom, led a life marked by dedication, humor, and kindness.

Tom grew up in Riverside, IL and then moved to Glenview, IL in the 1960s, where he lived until retirement; and, then moved to Tucson, AZ. Tom was the only child of George and Bertha (Amort) Vana, both parents of Bohemian descent.

Tom served in the Marine Corp. Reserves, where he embraced the discipline and camaraderie that military life offered. His commitment to service continued into his professional life as a realtor, where he worked with Quinlan & Tyson and later with REMAX North in Glenview, Illinois. His career was distinguished by his genuine care for his clients and his knack for making each individual feel valued.

Tom earned an MBA from Northwestern University, a testament to his belief in the importance of education and continuous self-improvement and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. This pursuit of knowledge paralleled his personal interests, which included active involvement in the Kiwanis Club of Glenview, Illinois, and volunteering at the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, the Republican Party, BBB of Arizona as Mediator and Tohono Chul Gardens in Tucson.

Tom loved sports including boating, skiing, racquetball and, of course, watching the Chicago Bears, Northwestern Wildcats and golf. He and Nancy enjoyed traveling as well. Tom actively supported his children's sports and activities including coaching girls' softball and track, participation in Little League, and working at the Chicago Marathon.

Tom was a loving, caring, and humor-filled man who deeply valued his family and community. He is survived by his son, William Vana; daughters, Holly Vana, Amy (James) Stedelin, Laura (Joe) Czekala, Kathy (Richard) Lam and Karen (Michael) Jones; and grandsons, Ethan Stedelin, Jonathon (Sarah) Stedelin and Tyler Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Vana.

Tom's life was characterized by his unwavering support for his family, his dedication to his community, and his ability to bring laughter and joy to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
