Timothy Bottcher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2025.
Tim Bottcher died on July 28, 2025 in Tallahassee. He was 63.

Timothy William Bottcher was born on November 24, 1961 in Chicago. After the Bottcher family relocated to Palm Beach County FL, Tim attended and graduated from Cardinal Newman HS in 1979. Tim continued his education at the University of Florida, where he earned a degree in broadcast journalism in 1989. After several years of TV and radio news in Tallahassee, Tim turned his communications skills to state government press offices at several agencies, including the Departments of Community Affairs, Lottery, and Children & Families, and the Governor's Office. He also served at the Florida House of Representatives and completed his state career at the Department of Revenue.

Tim considered himself a renaissance man and will be remembered for his wide band of interests. After his time in journalism, Tim continued to closely follow news and current events. Seldom did he not have an opinion on an issue. Tim's interest in politics grew during his time in news, and he eventually turned that curiosity into political activism. He volunteered for several local and statewide political campaigns, including President Obama's re-election bid in 2012. In recognition of his many hours of volunteering, Tim was chosen as a Florida Elector for Obama. He called his Electoral College vote one of the greatest honors of his life.

Culture and the arts held much appeal for Tim. He enjoyed TV, film, theater, but most of all music. His extensive vinyl and CD collection reflected his love of rock, R&B, and jazz. Tim especially enjoyed live performances. Over the years he could be found at venues ranging from local clubs to concert halls to outdoor amphitheaters. Tim was fond of saying that some of the best shows he ever saw were in small spaces.

Tim was a sports enthusiast, following football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and auto racing. He was proud and relieved when his beloved Chicago Cubs won the World Series in 2016, the team's first championship in 108 years. But Tim will mostly be remembered as an avid Miami Hurricanes fan. Over the years he was fortunate enough to witness the Canes football and baseball teams win national championships, and the men's basketball team reach its first Final Four in program history.

Tim led an active life. As a runner for more than 30 years, he competed in dozens of 5 and 10K races and ran his first marathon in 2020 at age 58. Between races he could be found running in the Camelot Park and Indianhead neighborhoods, as well as on the St. Marks Trail and Miccosukee Greenway. A few years ago, he re-discovered cycling and latched onto group rides. He enjoyed the fellowship that came with the running and cycling communities, and was a proud member of Gulf Winds Track Club and Capital City Cyclists.

Tim was preceded in death by his mother Betty, father Harry, sisters Kathleen (Oranges) and Lisa, and brother William.

While Tim had no surviving relatives, he had a close network of friends who loved him dearly and considered him family. He will be missed every day by those he left behind. A private celebration of Tim's life will be scheduled, and those close to him will be notified.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to causes that were important to Tim: WFSU Public Media, the Florida Democratic Party, COCA (Council on Culture & Arts), or the Florida Trail Association.

Sad to hear the news. I worked with Tim at the Fl Lottery and his professionalism was always paramount with a side order of wit and sarcasm. We shared some good times there where our paths crossed in this lifetime. Rest in comfort. You have done well.

This is very sad news indeed.
I worked with Tim at the Florida Lottery. He was always so jovial with me and a little mysterious. I´ve kept up with him on Facebook over the years and will miss him commenting "meow" every time I posted a selfie.
RIP Tim.

I was privileged to know Tim for more than thirty years as a co-worker at two agencies, a friend, and a neighbor. He had a big personality and a big laugh, and as a neighbor, was always ready and willing to lend a hand. Godspeed, Tim.

I knew Tim for 30 years and considered him a good friend. I always enjoyed getting together to talk sports and other world topics. He will be greatly missed.
