Timothy Tillinghast Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2014.
Timothy A. Tillinghast, age 65, of Berlin Heights, died peacefully at his home on November 5, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 22, 1948, in Sandusky, and has lived in Berlin Heights his entire life aside from military service. He was a 1966 graduate of Berlin Local School, a 1989 graduate of Columbia University, and a member of the Norwalk Eagles and the Berlin Heights American Legion. Tim enlisted in the US Navy in 1967 and proudly served until 1994, including during the Vietnam Conflict, Desert Shield, and Desert Storm. He began his career supporting Anti-Submarine Operations as an Aircrewman, later supporting the US Navy's efforts as a Recruiter, ultimately becoming a Zone Supervisor in NRD Cleveland, achieving the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. After retirement from the military he worked as a marketing director for Cleveland Public Power, and immersed himself in restoring the century home in which he was raised. Thereafter, Tim enjoyed "shore duty" tending to his crops, cattle, and farm stand on his gentleman's farm each day, proudly continuing the Tillinghast legacy. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Ann (Knittel), whom he married on April 19, 1969. In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Stacey (Corey) Morrill, of Twinsburg, and their children, Jack, Emily, Madison, and Hope Avery; a son, Jason (Melissa) Tillinghast, of Berlin Heights, and their children, Shelby, Gus, and Aisley; a twin brother, Michael (Ava) Tillinghast, of Berlin Heights; a sister, Susan (Paul) Wilson, of Berlin Heights; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Terrence and Dorothy (Sommers) Tillinghast. Friends may call on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Morman-Hinman-Tanner Funeral Home, 38 South Street, Berlin Heights, where services with military honors will be held on Monday at 11:00 am. Online condolences may be left at www.mormanfuneralhome.com. Memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice or the Huron County Humane Society. Tim lived his life full speed ahead embracing his family, friends, and passions with a mantra of "Life is good", always followed up with a smile and "Carry on". Fair winds and following seas.

Well, this is sad news for me and it's my own fault for finding out now that Tim has passed. I was looking to get in touch with him to talk to my old friend. He was indeed a rare good soul and I mean that coming from my heart. I am sad. I know I will see him again when it is my turn.

Dear Tillinghast Family,

We have you all in our thoughts and prayers at this time. I am honored that I had the opportunity to know Tim. You are surrounded by so many who care and continue to send prayers to you all. Pat and I both enjoyed any and all conversations with TIm about the hay, giant pumpkins (which he remided me were really gourds) , or of course the stock market. All our love and we are saddened by your great loss. love, colleen and pat murray and girls
