Tom Perry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2024.
Tom Perry Tom Perry, beloved husband, father, and musician, passed away on September 18, 2024, surrounded by his family after a life well-lived. Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 39 years, Lynda Perry, and their children: Sam (and his wife, Kat, and their children, Corbin and Cade) of Hurst, TX; Zachary Thomas of Denver, CO; and Brook (and her partner, Greyson Junggren) of Salt Lake City, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lee Perry. Tom is also survived by his siblings: Jim (and his wife, Carol) of Denver, CO; Bob (and his wife, Kelly) of San Marcus, TX; and Carol Perry of Carrollton, TX, along with numerous nephews and nieces. He leaves behind a legacy of love, music, and faith that touched the lives of many.

Tom was a dedicated professional musician for over 45 years, bringing joy to countless people as a band fiddler, band leader, soloist, orchestra player, strolling violinist, church music leader, singing cowboy, and teacher. From Western to Classical music, his talents knew no bounds. He performed concerts in churches across the Southwest and served as the Chaplain at Taos Ski Valley for 20 years. Beyond music, Tom had a deep love for photography, skiing, hiking, and biking. Even during his illness, his creativity flourished, as he produced a show that combined breathtaking Southwest landscapes with scripture, offering peace and comfort to all who watched.

Tom faced a rare and aggressive form of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma with remarkable courage. Initially given only a four-month prognosis, he defied the odds and fought valiantly for seven years. His treatment journey included traditional chemotherapy, engineered chemotherapy, cell therapies, and immunotherapy. Tom's resilience and strength led him to be one of the few survivors chosen to participate in a groundbreaking clinical trial for targeted chemotherapy, which has since gained FDA approval. His case was so extraordinary that it was presented at medical conferences, and his blood continues to contribute to ongoing research, helping to pave the way for future breakthroughs.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 12th at 11:00 am at the United Church of Angel Fire with a luncheon afterwards. In lieu of flowers, please make a gift to support the Saffer Endowed Cancer Research Chair Fund for Lymphoma Research. Gifts may be made online at giving.cu.edu/NAME or by mail in memory of Tom Perry to: University of Colorado Foundation, PO Box 17126, Denver CO 80217. On the memo line of the check, please note Tom Perry's name and Saffer Lymphoma Research.

Though I met Tom in junior high school, I grew to know him best during Covid as he led a wonderful Chaplain service with music, prayer, and short devotional. Tom was among the most solid men I knew, and I'm blessed to know many. He ministered to many in so many different ways. He became a really outstanding musician with strong discipline, and a voice of earnestness. A great man. May God bless his family in their grief.

Lynda and family - We treasured our warm friendship and music camaraderie with Tom all these years, his indominable courage during his health trials, his never-failing enthusiasm with his countless music projects on his Mountain Chapel website, Roku channel, Zoom church service work, live music/preaching, his Taos Ski Valley Chaplain work for decades...including perhaps the fastest guitar backpack down any black diamond run! Lynda, we learned about the wonderful woman you are just by being around Tom, how he cherished you and his family. We delighted in the times when we could have Tom sit in with our cowboy band or schedule him to present fiddle workshops for the Albuquerque Folk Festival. He used a lot of our Celtic music on his Mountain Chapel videos, and we learned of other lovely musicians and incredibly beautiful spots throughout northern New Mexico and southern Colorado through his impeccable photography and videography, and ability to integrate other´s artist´s products. We were always discussing music instruments, stage and computer audio equipment, and methods, Tom seeking to broaden music textures for his listeners´ comfort, and expand his reach to so many who´s burdens were made lighter through Tom´s intense kindness and gentle proclamation of God´s love. Lynda, we love and pray for you and yours, and look forward to future times when we get to meet with you.

Tom has always been a gentleman cowboy - gracious and respectful to men, women, kids, dogs and horses. He will be greatly missed but I have no doubt whatsoever that I will see him soon at the feet of the Savior - maranatha!

Tom Perry was my brother-in-law for a time while I was still a teenager. He was very kind and encouraging to me in those difficult years. He was always funny, charming, supportive and talented. I enjoyed his company and his music very much.
