Valerie Law Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 25 to Apr. 27, 2014.
With family, and dogs, by her side, Valerie Margaret Law, aged 77, died peacefully in her home on Monday, April 21, 2014.

Pre-deceased by son Robert (Kimberly), she is survived by husband Andrew, sister Wendy (Harry), daughter Sharon, son James (Sherry), daughter Joanna (Sheldon), grandchildren Matthew, Aysia, Jessica, Sara, Jennifer, Colton, great-grand daughter Isabel, and nephew Matthew.

Valerie met her husband on a blind date - he fell in love at first sight. A sailor for the British Merchant Marine, she told him, "It's either the sea or me." There was no question which one he would choose.

After living in Westerham, Kent she and her young family moved to Canada in 1967, settling in Vancouver - a city she loved, even though it wasn't in England.

Valerie trained as a nurse at the Royal Masonic Hospital in London, and after taking 16 years off to raise her family she re-certified in Canada and returned to nursing, spending 20 years at Evergreen House at Lions Gate Hospital.

She and Andrew have great tales of travelling with Wendy and Harry to far away lands visiting the sphinxes in Egypt, boating down the Seine, and aboard cruises to both arctic and tropical locales.

She loved tending to her beautiful garden, often emerging hours later with scrapes and scratches - proud war wounds from digging around and pruning her rhododendrons, clipping the top of the huge cedar hedge that ran the length of the front and back garden, and moving mounds of soil into planter boxes.

Valerie remained Britishly polite throughout her life and always kept in touch with the many friends she made. She was devoted to her family, loved her home, and was an ardent supporter of animal welfare. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the BCSPCA.

So sorry to hear the sad news. I have just completed a family tree from your mothers side which was ready to post. Have heard many lovely stories of your life from uncle Ted in London. So sorry we did not have time to talk about the family.

I visited the Law family in Vancouver only a handful of times, with a decade or more between visits, but each time it really felt like being with family, thanks to Valerie's warm, generous kindness, and her fabulous sense of humour. So sad for your loss - Valerie will be terribly missed. Sending love from the Australian branch of the family.

I was so sorry to hear of this and send all my sympathy to the family. I was at school with Valerie (Eothen) and we lived on the same road, so often played together after school. I have some fond (and funny) memories of her!

Gone from your sight, but not from your hearts. Treasure the memories.

Valerie. I shall miss you so much every time I go to Vancouver. You and Andrew were one of the first people I wanted to see. We were cousins in law and you really became like family to me. My condolences to Andrew and all the family. I send you all my love from Mexico.

Growing up across the street, I have fond memories of your Mum and endless days we spent playing with your dogs or in the treehouse in the back garden of your family home. It is such a peaceful place, and it is comforting to know that she was able to spend her last days there surrounded by the people she loved most. She was a beautiful woman devoted to her family and we will all miss her. Big hugs to you all.

You joined us for the good and bad and helped in my scariest times .I can not express how much you will be missed and how you became the mother in mother in-law I was so lucky to have you in my life and will miss you terribly. What a lovely tribute to your mother. I wish I could have known her better, but she is certainly in all of you. Peace and strength during this time of mourning and reflection.
