Vincent Hwang Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2025.
Vincent Y. Hwang, born on February 12, 1935, in Tainan, Taiwan, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Born Yeh Yueng-meaning "The Source of Joy"-to Kim-Mee and Yeh Hwang, Vincent came of age during a time of profound historical transformation. He lived through the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, endured the hardships of World War II, witnessed the rise of the Kuomintang government, and took part in the Free Taiwan movement that helped pave the way for democracy in his homeland.

Vincent pursued higher education at National Taiwan University in Taipei, where he studied economics and statistics. On August 13, 1958, he immigrated to the United States to attend graduate school at Kansas State University. There he deepened his knowledge with a focus on applying statistical methods to business using emerging computer technologies.

His professional career as a statistician and analyst spanned several prominent institutions in Manhattan, NY. He brought his expertise to Shell Oil, the New York Federal Reserve Bank, Citi Group, and CRT. Among his most notable contributions was his work at the New York Fed in collaboration with the University of Michigan to develop the Consumer Sentiment Index. Later in his career, he played a pivotal role in constructing pricing models that identified inefficiencies in the 30-Year Treasury Bond market.

Vincent's love for classical music began early in life when his father gifted him a record player along with over one hundred records-a gesture that sparked a lifelong passion. Music remained a source of joy throughout his life and especially during his final days under hospice care. A devoted learner and avid reader, Vincent enjoyed literature across four languages: Taiwanese, Japanese, Chinese, and English. In retirement, he found fulfillment in collecting articles, conducting independent research, and sharing insights on a wide range of topics. He also remained a loyal fan of the New York Yankees, attending many games at Yankee Stadium from the 1960s onward.

Faith was central to Vincent's life journey. His spiritual path began in Taiwan through the Catholic Church under Father O'Hara's guidance. After moving to America, he became an active member of Newtown Church, a mission of the Dutch Reformed Church to the Taiwanese population in Queens, New York. Later he joined the Taiwanese Reformed Church of New Jersey (now Fairlawn Community Church), where he served faithfully as both deacon and elder. When asked what gave him peace of mind, Vincent often said, "The fact that Almighty God is all around me all the time." His faith in Jesus Christ was the wellspring of his generosity, gentleness, and quiet strength throughout his life-and it provided him peace that surpasses understanding as he approached life's final chapter with dignity and gratitude.

Vincent is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Sumiko; their three children: Richard; Jeffery (Stacy); and Julie; and grandchildren: Noah, Joshua, and Benjamin. He is also remembered by his sisters: Marjorie (John), Elena (Evan), Angela (T.P.), and Agnes (Stanley); along with fourteen nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Newton.

A funeral service will be held on May 10, 2025, at Grace Community Church in Greensboro, NC. His remains will be interred during a private family ceremony at St. Francis Springs Prayer Center in Stoneville, NC.

I first met Vincent while dating his sister Elena in New York in early 1970.
He is kind and gentle, but more importantly he helped me approaching his sister in many subtle ways. When I became a Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch, he was one of the very early clients; and one of the best clients. He has never complained and he said a lot of good things about our services.

I know that he has engaged in Taiwan independence movement at a very early stage, confidentially. In many occasions, I saw him carried an expensive camera during Taiwanese anti KMT demonstrations. Every-time when he call me from east coast, most times they were related to Taiwan politics. At his final days, we have shared a lot of Taiwan Independent movement progress on his bedside. I missed you greatly, Vincent!

Vincent has been my role model ever since I was little. I have followed his footstep to enter National Taiwan University, baptized as a catholic, and coming to USA to attend Kansas state University. He is the best brother I can ever asked for. He is very knowledgeable, love reading and resourceful. Whenever I have question, he would go beyond his length to find the solution. He is gentle, kind, patient, understanding, loving. He is very low keyed, not fighting for fame. He is a good listener and very reasonable person. During our last visit, he agreed with me that he is going to a better place where there is no pain and where our parents and brother Newton will greet him with open arms. I will never forget his smile when I said goodbye, " We will meet again no matter where"! This time he is ahead of me again to return to our heavenly father. Dear Vincent, please be assured that we 4 sisters will take care of Sumiko.

I have always remembered Mr. Hwang's gentleness and faithful service at Fair Lawn. To Mrs. Hwang, Richard, Jeff, and Julie: I pray you may know the Lord's presence as you grieve; that you know He grieves with you but He is also welcoming home a faithful servant/son.
