Vincent John "Vince" McDermott
1941-2021
Vincent "Vince" John McDermott was born on May 24, 1941 in Haverstraw, New York to Frank Vincent McDermott and Agnes Lynch McDermott. He grew up in Nyack, NY with two brothers and two sisters. Vince earned his Bachelor of Science in Geology and Geophysics from Boston College and his Master's Degree from Kansas State.
In 1961, he landed his first O&G job with Standard Oil Company in Manhattan, KS; then remained with the company during a move to Oklahoma City, OK. Vince was part of the transitions from Standard Oil to Humble Oil, then to Esso, Enco, Exxon Company and finally ExxonMobil. As both a Geophysicist and a Geologist, Vince was incredibly knowledgeable and quite valuable to the company's operation. He moved his family numerous times, all work-related transfers, to where he was needed including Oklahoma, New Orleans, Singapore, London, and finally to the Houston, Texas area in 1980. He moved to Katy in 1986.
Vince retired from ExxonMobil in 1996 after 31 years of dedicated service. Even in retirement, Vince remained active supporting his community and working smaller O&G projects in Texas and Kentucky as part of his own firm called Global Exploration. He has been an active member at St. Peter's United Methodist Church, in Katy. He was Vice President of the Board of Houston Hospice for 6 years and helped shape the organization into the high level of care they provide today. How fitting that he was in hospice care before leaving Earth for Heaven.
He loved to travel, especially going on cruises with his wife Patty and long-time friends. Vince enjoyed golfing, freshwater fishing and deer hunting on the family's once owned ranch near Florence, Texas. As a boy from New York, he was certainly a New York Yankees fan. After moving to Houston, though, he became a huge Houston Astros fan and enjoyed going to games with his son and grandson. And oh when Altuve hit that game winning home against the Yankees in 2017 powering the Astros to the World Series (which they won)… wow what a moment he shared with his family.
Vincent John McDermott passed away in the early morning hours on Thursday, March 11, 2021 in Katy, Texas at the age of 79 years. Vince is survived by his wife, Patty McDermott of Katy, Texas; children, Mike McDermott and his wife Tiffanie of Katy, Lisa McDermott of San Diego, California, Chris Baldwin and his wife Maria of San Jose, California, and Steve Baldwin and his wife Francesca of San Diego, California; grandchildren, Ashton, Alan, Gabriella, Alejandro, Liam and Emmet; brothers, Pete McDermott of New York and Frank McDermott and his wife Judy of New Jersey; sisters, Mary McDermott of ¬Vermont and Agnes Alvord and her husband Mike of California; as well as many other loving family members and many friends (including his furry pal, Sam.)
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at St. Peter's United Methodist Church, in Katy, with Rev. Whitney Peper officiating.
