Vincent Powell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2025.
Vince Powell passed away on July 27, 2025 at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon, surrounded by his daughters. He was 88 years old. Vince was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 25, 1937. His family moved to Oregon when he was eight years old. Vince graduated from Wy-East High School in Hood River, and Linfield College in McMinnville, before earning his Masters in Education from the University of Oregon.

Vince and his wife Reba were married in 1957, and moved to Madras in 1964. He taught high school biology and sciences for over 30 years at Madras High School. He also coached baseball at MHS and was well known as a referee for basketball and football. He retired from the Jefferson County School District in 1994.

Vince was very active in the community. He organized swim lessons and coached little league softball. He was a regular attendee at volleyball, tennis, and cross country meets cheering on his daughters. He also made an impact on many students/athletes in Madras. Wherever he went around town he was greeted warmly from past students with "Hey coach, how are you?" or "What's up, Mr. Powell?"

Vince enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and water skiing. He loved being active and outside. After retirement, Vince and Reba took on a labor of love project, building the cabin at the lake. This is and will be the favorite place on earth for generations of Powells. Vince and Reba also had a great time traveling the world with friends. Vince will be remembered for his positive attitude and wonderful sense of humor.

Vince was predeceased by his wife Reba Powell, parents Pete and Chelsa Powell, and sister Jacqueline Powell. He is survived by his daughters Kristin Peterson and Karen Zurcher (Larry), grandchildren Kaitlyn, Lauren and Karlee Zurcher and Katie and Jackie Peterson, sister Janice Smith (Rod), and brother Jerry Powell (Renita).

A memorial service is scheduled for September 27th at 10:00 am at the United Methodist Church in Madras, Oregon.
