Vivencia Vanderlipe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2022.
Vivencia Vanderlipe, 93, passed away peacefully on 10 Dec 2022.

She was born Vivencia Caoile Calub on 22 Oct 1929 in Aringay, La Union, Philippines, to Victorio Orpilla Calub (1884-1959) and Eusebia Vargas Caoile (1888-1958). Her paternal uncles immigrated to the United States in the 1910s, but her father stayed back to raise his family, and her early life was dominated by fond memories of them who patiently doted on an increasingly high-spirited daughter.

World War II upended many plans; she survived, but four of her six beloved brothers perished; one of them, a U.S. Army veteran, wanted to send her to nursing school, but in the end, Vivencia attended a local fashion and tailoring school instead where she graduated second in her class. It augured her lifelong sense of style. In 1949, she met Alfonso Vanderlipe, also a U.S Army veteran, who was working on post-war reconstruction in their hometown. They married on 04 Sep 1950. Their union would last for 53 years until his death.

Abject poverty instilled in them a steely will to survive and the hard work and perseverance that comes with dreaming something better for their children. They became migrant laborers - farming and processing rice and tobacco, fishing, and construction, among other work that could bring in the most meager of income. In the 1960s, Alfonso made his way to California working in the Central Valley fields, then the Livermore vineyards, before becoming a custodian for Valley Memorial Hospital. Vivencia and their children followed him in the 1970s. She worked as an electronic assembly technician for years prior to retirement.

Vivencia lived in Livermore, California for 45 years where she and Alfonso once bought a home that was the weekend gathering spot for the family. He passed away in 2003. She is also preceded by her parents and six brothers, and her son Teofilo who died at childbirth in 1951. She is survived by her children Reynaldo, Victor, Lilia, Anita, Carmen, Imelda, and Edwin; their spouses; 18 grandchildren; and an ever-growing number of great-grandchildren.

She was asked once what her secret was to her long life. Vivencia simply said, "I'm happy." She surrounded herself with family, humor, and love. Her elegance and expansive laughter will be greatly missed.

Visitation and Services will be held at Callaghan Mortuary and Livermore Crematory (3833 East Ave, Livermore, CA 94550) on 20 Dec 2022, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. She will then join and rest with her beloved husband Alfonso at the San Joaquin National Cemetery in Gustine, CA.

December 15, 2022

Compassionate, loving, and caring mom who doesn't seem to know how to get mad at you in our youthful years with my siblings until we've grown up. She had a mellow but firm voice when she speaks instead of being enraged or ill-tempered. I guess that's the way she wants to instill discipline in us. I miss my mom so much. May she rest in peace in heaven with my dad now.
