Walter Couper Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Feb. 23 to Feb. 24, 2008.

COUPER Walter September 12, 1944 - February 18, 2008 It is with great sadness we announce that Walter passed away peacefully at the age of 63 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Sharon of 46 years, his children Robert, Kelly, Steve (Paula) and grandchildren Kimberly, Siara, Kyla and Tiana. Wally enjoyed his years working at UNIVAR Canada with all the friends he made there and even in his final days still talked about how he wished he could go back to work. Coach Wally leaves behind an amazing legacy in the sporting community. He loved coaching and mentoring kids and thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent with Steve's U11 SurDel Select Storm soccer and Delta Heat 97 fastpitch teams. The girls and their families were supportive and inspirational to him in his battle. The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Mitchell, Dr. Oja, Dr. Alexiadis, and Michael from Delta Prescription Clinic. Also special thanks to the chemo and palliative care staff at Surrey Memorial Hospital for their loving care. We love you and will miss you dearly: Wally, Dad, Grandpa, Papa, Coach, Grapes and Best Friend and we know you will be watching over us. We will be celebrating Walter's life at Chalmers Elementary School located at 11315 - 75 Ave, Delta, BC on March 1, 2008 at 3:00 pm.

I was very shocked and saddened to hear of Wally's passing. I only knew Wally for a short time with his involvement with Steve's ball hockey but I will always remember his honesty, enthusiasm and his love of life. My condolences to Sharon, Steve & their family.

Wally, from watching you ride by the house on your bike day after day, or seeing you at the field rain or shine to watch the various soccer and ball teams play, to laughing at your jokes when the obvious was just too obvious to mention, you knew just how to put it to bring a smile to our faces. You were one of a kind. We are glad to have known you for the past four years and wish there had been many more. All our love to Sharon and the Couper clan. A unique group of dear friends.

My condolences to "Wally's" family. He was a good man with a big heart and a love of sports. When Chris and Steve played soccer, you could be sure Wally would be there....shouting words of encouragement and giving advice to the players. He had a knack for knowing the talents and skills of every player and instinctively knew where they should be on the field. I admired his spirit. I'll miss you on the sidelines Wally. I am sure you will be coaching another team where you are.
