Walter Manduke

Walter Manduke, 83, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2006 at the South Jersey Healthcare-Regional Medical Center after a long illness of mental and physical deterioration.

He was born and raised in the Ukrainian community along Carmel Road in Millville. He graduated from Millville High School in 1940.

A veteran of WWII, he served in the South Pacific with the Army Air Force where he survived 52 missions as a B-25 crewman, receiving a number of combat decorations.

After the war, Walt returned to live in Millville and spent a career working at the Owens Illinois Factory in Bridgeton as a machine repairman. Always active in the Millville Ukrainian community, he was a member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, where he sang tenor in the choir. He was also a member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian-American Club, holding several officer positions in the club over the years.

An able athlete, Walt was a member of the St. Nick’s city championship basketball team and baseball team during the late forties/early fifties. While his children were in St. Mary Magdalen parochial school, Walt was also active in the St. Mary Magdalen parish, and was a member of their Knights of Columbus chapter for several years, serving as Grand Knight of the Chapter from 1966 to 1967.

Walt is survived by his four children, W. Mark Manduke of Ashburn, Va., John Manduke of Millville, Valerie Marks of Deptford, and Joseph Manduke of Millville; a half-brother Paul Rudowsky of Bridgeton; a half-sister Olga Michaels of Toledo, Ohio; and 5 grandchildren Melody Matthews of Gibbsboro, Matthew Manduke, Philip Manduke, Stephen Manduke, and Alex Manduke, all of Millville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 27, 2006 at the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Carmel Road, Millville. There will be a viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the CHRISTY FUNERAL HOME, 11 W. Broad Street, Millville.

A Panachyda service will start at 8 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be at the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church cemetery, only a few hundred yards from where he was born.
