Walter Morgan, M.D. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 18, 2025.
Walter Albert Morgan was born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma on September 11,1935 to Clifford Veryl Morgan and Anna Herrmann. He passed on June 18, 2025 in Susanville, CA with his wife Marlene at his side. His youth was largely spent in Washington DC; although, he completed high school in Heidelberg, Germany where his father was stationed as a physician rebuilding hospitals for the Army after WWII. He attended George Washington University in DC for his undergraduate degree and his general practice MD. His internship was in San Jose, CA, and his residency was completed in Modesto, CA. He married Judith Lydecker in 1960. After a summer in Yosemite, they lived in Afghanistan for 3 years associated with the Peace Corp and then returned to CA. Transformed by an understanding of rural and indigent health needs by the Afghanistan experience, he earned a Master's of Public Health at UC Berkeley and then accepted a position at West Virginia University in 1970 in Morgantown as the chair of the Division of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. He returned to CA in 1975 to work at UC Davis' Medical School. During his time at UC Davis he served as a preceptor for family practice residents. He saw patients once a week and he was beloved by his students and patients. He also served as the medical director for the FNP/PA program. He was promoted to professor and was elected as the President of the Senate. Throughout his medical career, he remained committed to serving the health care needs of rural patients.

Walter enjoyed a long marriage to Marlene Kramer from 1991 until his death and they lived in Loomis, Newcastle, Wilton, and Susanville, CA.

His children will remember him for his intellect, quiet sense of humor, commitment to an accepting and just world, love of history, travel, and architecture, and the beauty that nature holds. He loved reading a good newspaper and enjoyed the comic Prince Valiant for reasons none of us could comprehend.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Monte and Marvin. He is survived by Marlene Kramer, Scott (Daisy) Morgan, Betsy (Pete) Morgan, Quincy (Cortney) McCourt, Kermit McCourt and grandchildren Adam Levonian, Zach Levonian, Daniella Morgan-Pascualvaca, and Wilder McCourt. Yada Yada, Shogi, and Falcon round out the team of critters and people who loved him.

May his memory be for a blessing.
I remember he came and lectured about Afghanistan in our Davis High School history class. He was full of life, and he passed this on to his children and grandchildren.

Love his obvious commitment to learning and understanding of others and their wellbeing as demonstrated by his lived experience and passed on by his children and grandchildren
I hope that you may continue to share his kindness and values to others and yourselves as you mourn his physical loss. Peace. Paula Knudson
