Walter R. Sturdy

Walter R. Sturdy January 17 1942 - January 12 2016 Walter R. Sturdy born in Vancouver, January 17, 1942, son of William Jordan Sturdy and Flora Love Teetzel, died peacefully, January 12, 2016 in Sechelt, British Columbia surrounded by his children and family.

Walter (aka Walter Wonderful or Double Standard Sturdy) grew up in Vancouver. He felt fortunate to have worked for some great companies including; Standard Oil, Union Oil, MacMillan Bloedel, and Sandwell Engineering. He later moved to the Sunshine Coast where he worked for Howe Sound Pulp and Paper, eventually purchasing and presiding over the Roberts Creek General Store and its environs.

Walter may or may not be missed as the long time unforgiving and unofficial Mayor of Roberts Creek. He was not known to shy away from a debate and you could often find him at the store, or the Legion, arguing the merits of various politics, policies, or perspectives.

Walter enjoyed beer, food, and women (generally in that order) and lived well, mentioning before he died, that he "had a great life, had few regrets, was not afraid, and it was time". While he will be remembered for outspoken manner, and an intolerance of "hippy potheads", he was also a generous and considerate man. He was proud of his children and in later years felt fortunate and privileged to have such a dedicated and committed staff at the store.

He is survived by his children Jordan (Trish), Caleb, Jessica (Don), William, Katherine and Anne, along with his grandchildren, Emma, Thea, Gwen, Kate, and Ashton.

A party and remembrance will be held for Walter at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club in Roberts Creek on Saturday April 2nd at one o'clock. Please bring your (brief) anecdotes.
