Walter G. Val' Valentine December 25, 1924 - April 30, 2020 Carlsbad Walter "Val" Valentine beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle passed away at home on April 30, 2020. He was a Valentine born on Christmas Day in Springfield, MA. He was devoted to his family and the United States Marine Corps. His rich 31 year military career included serving during the WW II assault landings of Bougainville and Guam. His personal highlight of WW II was witnessing the flag raising at Iwo Jima. He participated in the assault landing of Inchon and the Chosin Reservoir campaign during the Korean War. He served with the Scarface Unit as a door gunner and earned his Combat Crew Wings while in Vietnam. He received numerous decorations for his service including the Purple Heart. He joined the Marine Corps in 1942 and proudly retired as a Sergeant Major in 1973. He went on to serve the Marine Corps for another 33 years in Civil Service at USMC Base Camp Pendleton, CA. He was especially proud of the Pre-Retirement Seminar he helped develop for active duty Marines transitioning to civilian life. Over 20,000 retirees attended this seminar. Val was President of the Retired Sergeant Majors Association for 26 years. He spent over 30 years actively involved with Toys for Tots. He was an Honor Flight participant in 2016 and his trip to Washington D.C. was a highlight of his final years. Val was preceded in death by the love of his life, Claire A. Valentine. He is survived by six children, Carol Balmer, Jim Valentine (Jane), Janet Valentine, Debbie Valentine, Patti Henderson (Roy), and Mary Valentine-Frolander (Eric). He will be deeply missed by many including, his 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions a private burial will be held. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Honor Flight San Diego or Toys for Tots.

I had the honor and pleasure of meeting "Val" when I assisted him in making an appointment for his vehicle to be serviced at Encinitas Ford. I still treasure the handwritten card he gave me and still have it in my office. What an inspiration you are Val. With deep respect and love, Judy Reitman

It was with great pleasure that I knew the Valentines. Val was an uplifting spirit that always wore the smile you see in that picture. He loved his wife Claire more than any words could express. He had been broken hearted since her passing and now that he is in heaven I know he is at peace. He no longer needs to sit on the porch sipping coffee in the morning to talk to her from earth. He is part of a dying generation that has wisdom we will never get back. Thank you Val for being a part in the story of my life. You may be gone but you are never forgotten!

Val was a great man and such a kind spirit. He always had a smile on and loved all he knew. I was blessed to have known him and Claire and they both hold a special place in my heart. I know he is in heaven now with his love, Claire.

To the family of the wonderful man who Val was. Such a wise, loving & caring man. He always made time to listen. Always a smile for everyone. He is with his true love Claire now. He will truly be missed-a man who knew how to live life. I will be sure my grandaughter Kirra Rose ( your great-granddaughter) will truly treasure you forever-she knows how much you loved her. To Val's family, please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. I really don't even have the words to say how much SgtMaj Valentine meant to me, but I think you know. He was my buddy...my mentor, but most of all...my friend. I will forever treasure the very special relationship we shared, and I am extremely grateful to have had him in my life.
My dearest Val, I will miss you forever... and as we would say at the end of every conversation "Tiamo, Sergeant Major."
God bless you Val, and may God rest your soul.

Val is such a sweet old man! I love listening to his stories of his adventures when he was a young man and of course his greatest love Claire! He talks fondly of her, reminiscing about how she took good care of all his kids when he was away, serving the military. He would always show her beautiful picture. I miss them both, but I am glad that they are now together. They are really genuine good people, with both loving, smiling faces. ❤.

As a retired Marine, Im honored to have known SgtMaj Valentine for almost 20 years. He was a friend and a dedicated Marine till the end. He loved his family beyond words and bragged on the often. He loved Claire so much and loved showing off her picture. He always had a twinkle in his eye, a kind word, and a lifelong dedication to his beloved Corps. God Bless his family...so many loved him.
