Willard Michael, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 5, 2025.
Willard Edward Michael, Jr., affectionately known as Pastor Mike, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 3, 2025, in Bloomington, Illinois, at the age of 94.

Born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Mike was the beloved son of the late Willard Edward Michael, Sr. and Elsie Marie Simpson. A 1949 graduate of Martins Ferry High School, he began a lifelong journey of service - to his country, his community, and most importantly, his Savior.

On July 12, 1949, Mike enlisted in the United States Navy in Steubenville, Ohio. He received electronics training at Great Lakes Naval Station and served honorably at the U.S. Naval Station in Key West, Florida. It was during this time that he encountered Jesus Christ, a transformative moment that would shape the rest of his life. He was honorably discharged on April 9, 1953.

After his military service, Mike pursued higher education, graduating from Wheaton College in 1957. Answering a call to ministry, he enrolled at the Conservative Baptist Theological Seminary in 1961, earning a Bachelor of Divinity in 1965.

On April 11, 1955, Mike married the love of his life, Betty June Hardman, in Warrenville, Illinois. Together, they built a life centered on faith and family, raising three daughters: Peggy Mast (Josh), Polly Rempel (Scott), and Patti Fiorillo (Dan). His children remember him as a faithful man of God, a devoted husband, and a wise and gentle father.

Pastor Mike dedicated his life to shepherding others through ministry - offering guidance, compassion, and unwavering faith to all who knew him.

Preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn Bell, Mike is survived by his loving wife, Betty, three daughters, 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, a loving legacy that will endure for generations.

A private family service will be held in his honor. In lieu of a public memorial, the family invites you to share your memories and reflections of Pastor Mike for the family to read. Please send notes and letters of remembrance to:

Pastor "Mike" was my Pastor of Pastors. His teachings stayed with you all week+, his pastoral heart huge. I once caught this Baptist dancing in the hallway and he was full of joy....he had just led another seeker to Christ! My sweetest personal memory was when we went fishing for trout in Grayling. We rested on a log that crossed the river, and he gave me a little mini sermon about the unknowables this side of heaven. He promised me it would all be revealed when we got there......now he has all the answers!! Mike was also infamous for singing Operatic arias as he cruised the church....I would like to hear that again. One time we double dated at the Jackson Dairy and got their "Dare to be great" portion of ice cream that was about the size of a wheel barrow. We attacked it with a vengeance......but almost lost it when we hit a very bad rail road crossing going home. Mike and Betty are forever friends that we have been privileged to share life with. Hugs, love and prayers for Betty and family. Ken and Jeanette Achterberg
