William A. Elliot Obituary
Bill Elliot was born to Marion and Howard Elliot, medical missionaries, in Ootacamund, India. He grew up in India, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Bill earned a B.A. in chemistry from Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, and an M.D. from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. He married Shirley-Mae Lee in 1956.
Bill led a life of service. He served as an orthopedic surgeon in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1977. He was commanding officer of the First Medical Battalion, First Marine Division in Danang, Vietnam. When he left the Navy, he and his family moved to Nevada City where he started a private practice.
Bill volunteered with the Interfaith Food Ministry and with Health Volunteers Overseas. When he wasn't working, he loved to ski, hike, fish, and watch birds.
Bill is survived by his wife, Shirley-Mae; daughter Allison; son Evan; granddaughter Lailey; and sisters Jean Nobbe and Patricia Dienstfrey.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any gifts be directed in Bill's name to any charitable organization.
Friends are invited to remember Bill at an informal gathering at the Northridge Restaurant in Nevada City on Sept. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m.
