ACIERNO
WILLIAM A.
Doctor of Education, age 83, of Danville, PA, died on January 1, 2014. His health had been failing as a result of diabetes for several years. He was born on July 6, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA (Allegheny County), the son of the late Agnes (Sgambati) and Victor Acierno. Bill graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1948. He received a BA from the University of Pittsburgh, his MFA from Carnegie Institute of Technology and a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University, all located in Pittsburgh, within walking distance of his childhood home. A veteran of the Korean War, Bill served in the Navy. Bill worked at WQED, Pittsburgh's public TV station, where he was acquainted with "Mr. Rogers" of children's public television fame. For a period of time he worked in New York City, writing TV commercials, jingles, and product slogans for CBS. Bill taught Speech and Theater Arts at Greenville High School in Greenville, PA and also taught for Pittsburgh's Public School System. He resurrected, managed, directed, and acted in plays at Rabbit Run, a summer stock theater in Madison, OH located on the shore of Lake Erie. Long before his success in "The Graduate" and "Tootsie", Dustin Hoffman performed at Rabbit Run Theater. Bill came to teach at then called Bloomsburg State College in the Fall of 1966. He instructed Speech, Theater Arts and eventually, Mass Communications, until his retirement in 1992, at which time he was designated as a Professor Emeritus. Throughout his tenure, Bill served as Acting Chair of Speech and Theater Arts and as Chairman of Mass Communications. He was elected as the first president of the faculty union and served in that capacity from 1971 to 1979. In 1980 and 1985 respectively, Bill founded WBSC-AM and WBUQ-FM and served as moderator for "Night Talk" which featured the movers and shakers from area businesses, organizations, and governmental bodies. He produced, directed, and acted in a variety of musicals and plays that were offered to the community at large over the years. Most memorable were, "The Man of La Mancha" and "Becket". He was affectionately known as "BWANA" by the players on Bloomsburg University's Lacrosse team that he coached for 12 years and by the brothers of Phi Epsilon Chi fraternity, which he helped to found and then served as the local fraternity's advisor. Bill was later affiliated with a national fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha. He also served as advisor for Alpha Si Omega, a theater arts academic fraternity. In partnership with the American Cancer Society, Bill helped found a local telethon using the Mass Communications Department's studios, TV equipment, and student volunteers to raise thousands of dollars for the Cancer Society locally. Additionally, he served as President of the Columbia County Cancer Society for many years. In 1975, Bill was awarded the prestigious Ray Calabrese Medallion for his support of and volunteer work for the Cancer Society. He is survived by his sister, Angeline Acierno Lovuola (wife of the late Joseph A. Lovuola) of Pittsburgh, PA; Bill was a cherished uncle of Victor Lovuola (Melanie) of Houston, TX, Lisa Lovuola of Fairview Park, OH, Nina Lovuola Tommarello (Jerome) of Pittsburgh, PA, Paul Acierno (Nancy) Rennerdale, and Jeff Acierno (Elaine) of Taylors, SC; there are several great- nieces, great-nephews, and godchildren of friends and former students. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dominic and Victor Acierno, both from Pittsburgh. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Pittsburgh at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to be sent to the American Cancer Society Montour Unit 1420 N. Susquehanna Trail Selinsgrove, PA 17870. Bill and family used to stay at my grandparent's cottage in Madison, Ohio back in the 70's. Very nice family and great times on the shores of Lake Erie. Such a friendship was created that my grandparents went out to Bloomsburg to stay at Bill's house.

I was thinking of Bill some years back and wrote him a letter telling him of my grandparent's passing and sharing some tidbits of our lives. I was very pleasantly surprised to receive a phone call from him late one evening and we had a great time catching up and sharing stories. Seems to me he invited me to look him up if I was ever passing through Bloomsburg.

Nice memories all these years later. RIP Bill.

I was just one of Dr. Acierno's undergraduate students at Bloomsburg in the in early 709's. I liked Dr. Acierno and his speech class very much. We were required to do a dramatic reading and I still remember the first half of the “dagger speech” from MacBeth.

Cin cin to a great teacher!!

Is this a dagger which I see before me,
The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.
I have thee not, and yet I see thee still.
Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible
To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but
A dagger of the mind, a false creation,
Proceeding from the heat-oppressèd brain?
I see thee yet, in form as palpable
As this which now I draw.
Thou marshall'st me the way that I was going,
And such an instrument I was to use.
Mine eyes are made the fools o' th' other senses,
Or else worth all the rest. I see thee still,
And on thy blade and dudgeon gouts of blood,
Which was not so before. There's no such thing.
It is the bloody business which informs
Thus to mine eyes. Now o'er the one half-world
Nature seems dead, and wicked dreams abuse
The curtained sleep. Witchcraft celebrates
Pale Hecate's offerings, and withered murder,
Alarumed by his sentinel, the wolf,
Whose howl's his watch, thus with his stealthy pace,
With Tarquin's ravishing strides, towards his design
Moves like a ghost. Thou sure and firm-set earth,
Hear not my steps, which way they walk, for fear
Thy very stones prate of my whereabout,
And take the present horror from the time,
Which now suits with it. Whiles I threat, he lives.
Words to the heat of deeds too cold breath gives.

Bill was so kind to us when we were a young family sharing the same apartment wall in the late 1980's in Bloomsburg. I recall him sharing the stories of working at WQED and with Dustin Hoffman. His kind and generous spirit was inspiring. My sincere sympathy to Mrs. Angie Lovoula, Nina & Jerry Tommarello, and all of Bill's family.

Bwanna was our faculty adviser during my time in Lambda Chi Alpha in Bloomsburg State College (now BU) during the years 1972 -1975.He was truly a gentleman and mentor to the young men going through some of the most character shaping years of their lives. He was a relevant man to those who knew him. God Bless Bwanna & may he rest in peace.

Bill and I have been friends since around 1956 When I dated a friend of his. We lost touch with each other for several years and renewed our friendship in later years. He called to say "good bye" but we weren't home. He left a message. When I got the message I tried to reach him but that was not to be. I knew he was still alive but didn't reach out since it seemed he didn't want to be reached. I loved him so much.
