William Asley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 1, 2019.
William J. Asley, 86
Newspaper platemaker, jack of all trades, retired to Pennsylvania
William J. "Bill" Asley III, of Lahaska, Pa., passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2019.
Bill was the beloved husband of Irene (Sweeney), with whom he shared 66 years of marriage. He was the loving father of William J. Asley IV (Patricia) and Barbara Partridge, and the beloved grandfather of Bryan Partridge.
Born and raised in Mariners Harbor, N.Y., Bill was the son of the late William J. and Rose (Conney) Asley, and was also preceded in death by his sisters, Doris Voto and Rosemarie Borruso.
Along with his high-school sweetheart, Irene, Bill graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1950. He entered the Air Force in 1952 during the Korean War. Following basic training in Biloxi, Miss., where the Asleys were married, Bill spent two years in France with the Strategic Air Command. His last tour of duty was as a radar bomb scoring crew chief at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.
After his discharge in 1956, Bill spent 35 years with the New York Herald Tribune and The New York Times as a union platemaker. He was also a real-estate broker on Staten Island for many years, and operated several small businesses.
Bill was the quintessential handyman, able to diagnose and repair just about anything: plumbing, electrical, mechanical, home renovations and more. Other interests included gardening, reading and exploring small towns in New England and the Bucks County, Pa., countryside to which he retired.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation at Harmon Funeral Home in West Brighton from 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart R.C. Church, 981 Castleton Ave. Burial to follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Penn Medicine Development, 3535 Market St., Suite 750, Philadelphia, Pa. 19104.
