As the co-author of TELLING YOURSELF THE TRUTH, I feel mortified at Bill's loss, yet I know that he is now hand-in-hand with the Savior he loved and served so faithfully for so many wonderful, fruitful years.
Poet Philip Larkin wrote, "If grief could burn out like a sunken coal the heart would rest quiet." Bill Backus will forever be cherished by friends, colleagues, family and all who were touched by his life and work. He was a vitally important person in my life, and it is in the "coals of grief" that I join those who loved him and say goodbye. God bless and hold you tight, dear Candy.
And oh Bill, you will be so terribly missed.

Bill was my brother-in-law, married to my sister Candy for 33 years. Through these many years, Bill blessed me richly many times with personal counseling in my times of dire need. He blessed me with his generosity in sharing his home with me many times through the years, and with his never ending love for my daughter Kirsten and myself. His humor, his instigation of very challenging discussions, his pranks (yes, the serious pastor and psychologist had another side to him!), and his intense love for the Lord will bring smiles to my face forever. The most important blessing is that he loved my sister, Candy, with all of his heart. He was a very special person in my life and I will miss him terribly. He left a wonderful legacy for all of us. When we truly engage in the Truth...the Truth surely sets us free.

Like so many others who have posted here, his book, "Telling Yourself the Truth" was instrumental in my recovery and turned my life around when I hit bottom. He will live on forever both in the kingdom of heaven and in the lives he helped rescue.

Dear Candy and other loved ones,
Dr. Backus, his books, his teaching, his clinic, etc. touched my life and the lives of my loved ones far more than I could begin to express in this book entry. I had hoped he would live to be a hundred. It seemed as if he would. May you all be comforted by precious memories of "Dr.B." and by the love of Jesus.

Addy and I were blessed to work at the Center for Christian Psychological Services for thirteen years, always appreciative of Dr. Backus's integrity, honesty, and deep commitment to the Word of God.
His support for Sanctus Marriage Enrichment gave us courage to pioneer this ministry. Special blessings from God to all his family and friends.

We are sorry to read of Dr. Backus' passing. We were blessed by his ministry at North Heights and enjoyed his Bible classes. We have really missed him since we moved to Sun City. We extended our condolences to Candy and pray for God's blessing and peace upon her.

"Telling Yourself The Truth" came along in my life from a dear friend when I was going through desperate times in the mid 80s. I don't believe I'd be here today if not for that book, and the truths in it.
After moving to Minneapolis, I was blessed to have several meetings with Dr. Backus. He was more like a loving father than a doctor. I truly, truly am a better person because of him, and my deepest condolences go to his family.
Many blessings,

The work Dr. Backus did and the books he wrote have been instrumental in helping many people, including me, get through the tough times in life. May the Lord provide his family with the comfort of His presence and the blessings that come from a life lived in His service. My condolences to the family of Dr. William Backus.

There are no words to express what Dr. Backus did for me. He helped me through very difficult times in my life. I will never forget the day I found out my breast cancer was in my lymph node system and I needed more surgery. My husband got Dr. Backus on the phone. He said, "Carol, I know you are overcome with fear, but keep one thought in your mind for tonight - Trust God." There are so many more things... I could fill a notebook. His life definitely changed my life and led me and my husband, Jeff, closer to The Lord.
