William Simon Jacobson, 88 of Cedar Rapids died Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at Belle Plaine Specialty Care. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m., Monday, September 26, 2022 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church by Rev. Aaron Junge. Burial: St. Ann Cemetery, Long Grove. Friends may visit with the family after 9 a.m. on Monday at the church. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosemary; five children, Kathryn of Robins, Andrew of Bowie, MD, Ruth (Dale) Elenteny of Lemont, IL, Damien of Robins, and Rachel (Matt) Lucas of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren, Dale, Claire, William, and Eileen Elenteny, and Stella and Simon Lucas. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Joan. Bill was born January 10, 1934 in Sloan, son of Emmett and Hazel Wickersham Jacobson. He graduated from Onawa High School in 1952 and served in the Navy from 1954 to 1958. Bill graduated from the University of Iowa in 1960 with a degree in history. He also received an M.A. in journalism in 1962 and an M.A. in social studies in 1971. Bill began teaching history in the Cedar Rapids School District in 1962; he retired from Kennedy High School in 1995. He married Rosemary O'Connor on August 17, 1963 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Long Grove. Bill was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Bill traveled extensively, and was a voracious reader of history, politics, and theology. He was passionate about teaching, and his years in the classroom brought him great joy. He also spent a good deal of time complaining about the weather...especially in the winter. He loved his family and will be deeply missed. Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to Birthright of Cedar Rapids, 375 Collins Road NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.

I´ve had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Jacobson (and Mrs.) through their wonderful daughter, Ruth. It would be nearly impossible to find a kinder, wiser man. Together with his wife, he left the world a better place and will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to Mrs Jacobson, Ruth and the entire Jacobson/Elenteny family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Jake was the student newspaper advisor and journalism teacher when I was at JFK, early 80s. Several of us from that era went on to pursue careers in journalism. I can still see him walking down the hall with his pica ruler. He was a smart and interesting person, yet he put up with a lot of our stupid high school antics and sometimes laughed along with us. If we bugged him enough, he would take our change and go buy us canned pop in the teacher lounge. Once in a while he'd have a bonfire on his property and invite The Torch newspaper staff. He talked about his wife and kids a lot, and I know he cherished his family. Condolences to all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Jacobson epitomized all the things a teacher should be. He was knowledgeable, kind, entertaining, and inspirational. His amazing sense of humor was so refreshing! Jake, as we lovingly called him, was always more of an advocate than an adversary as he related to his students. He made everyone feel valuable. Even when we got out of line, he would correct us almost with a wink. He even had the Journalism Lab students over to his home. He and Mrs Jacobson were wonderfully gracious hosts. I will cherish the memories of his guidance and kindness. My sincere condolences to his family: if his impact on his students is this lasting, I can only imagine being in his family. God bless you.

Mr. Jacobson was my student teaching supervisor at Kennedy in the early 1970's. In an era when social studies classes had entered a period of little rigor, he modeled the need for high expectations of students and the importance of understanding history. He used a variety of stimulating activities and materials to involve students. Most of all, he demonstrated the importance of understanding that there needs to be a friendly but respectful distance between the teacher and the student. He was a kind and patient mentor to me and I have never forgotten him.

Mr. Jacobson was a guide and inspiration (JFK ‘75) to me. I was college bound for a Science major and becoming a teacher, but I had bloomed a bit as a writer: he taught, advised me to consider that as well and so I ended up at ISU as Animal Ecology/Journalism. Over the years I used that stringing on small town papers for an ex-JFK press assistant, a gig doing a community magazine with a NatGeo retiree, as a contracted writer for Meredith Publishing and other pieces. In my mind, I thanked him for “planting the seed”. To the Jacobson family: So sorry for your loss, but glad he left behind such a plethora of Jacobson seeds.

William S. Jacobson and I shared the same name with a different middle initial. We both taught Social Studies in the Cedar Rapids Schools. At times we assumed each other's identity when errors were made. He always handled that well. I knew him as a great teacher. I considered him a friend and fellow educator.

Bill had a good mind, and loved to read. He passed that along to his students. We both had roots in western Iowa. Monona county was my wife's home. I join with his family and friends in celebrating his life. He wore our name well. God bless.

I had Mr. Jacobson for my History class at George Washington High School my Sophomore year. Also the Family were close friends of my cousin Mary Ellen Davidson Cross as she would babysit for them. I had the privilege of being able to take Communion to the family during his time of illness.

Dear Family, I substituted for Bill many times at Kennedy, and we had many long conversations about world religions, history, politics and Catholicism. Wonderful memories of those days! Thanks for the memories, Bill.
