William Cosgrove Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 12 to Nov. 13, 2022.
William Cosgrove, of New City, NY, passed away on November 8, 2022.

He was born April 5, 1938 to Owen Cosgrove and Ellen (Gilligan) Cosgrove in New York City, NY. He attended Resurrection Ascension School in Rego Park, NY and earned his bachelor's degree from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.

After graduation he secured a teacher's position with Clarkstown High School in New City, NY, where he was well respected and admired as a long time educator with a specialty in Economics.

Bill was a loving brother to his siblings Mary(Maureen) McCarthy, Nora (Noreen) Ferriter, Catherine (Cathy) Meacham and Owen Cosgrove. He had fourteen nieces and nephews that he was equally dedicated to and made a priority in his life. Dear Uncle Bill played an important role in every wedding, was present at every communion and christening and celebrated every milestone throughout the years. Christmas was special for grand nieces and nephews who all received Hess trucks from Uncle Bill faithfully each year.

He was an avid skier, golfer and his dancing skills were beyond compare. An event show stopper was when Bill and his sisters, twins Maureen and Noreen, performed the horn pipe reel jig and three hand reel Irish dance steps. He loved attending weddings and true to his Irish roots, there was nothing like a good funeral. We would all look forward to Bill's phone call describing every detail of the event from start to finish, with both good and bad criticism.

After retiring from his admirable teaching career, Bill began his second act as a financial advisor. He was never hesitant to explain the pitfalls and importance of your credit score.

Bill was a brilliant man. He was proud of his Irish heritage. Education was always a main focus throughout his life but it was love of family that meant the most to him. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

When his beloved mother, Ellen, passed away, Bill dutifully stepped up and became his father , Owen's faithful companion. He drove him to every family event and activity , never missing an occasion. Upon leaving his Dad at the doorstep at the end of the evening, Owen would say, "Well done, Bill."

On behalf of our family we can say to Bill on his life well lived...

"Well done, Bill. We love you".
