I learned so much about cooking from this man. He was like a father to me. He was the most kind and generous man to everyone he met, and always made me laugh. We shared a love of Doo-Wop, corny jokes, and great food. He was the best boss, and he will be missed dearly.

So sad to hear of Billy's passing. He was a very warm welcoming guy. I'll always remember the good times we had the few years I was one of the Hambones regulars. Prayers to all.

I will always have good memories of Bill & Hambone's. When he realized who my father was, we talked about St. Mary's basketball team and my father's coaching skills and the good days of Leslie Park and the little league teams. Hambone's was the best place to hang out and meet people (I met my husband there and got engaged there). May you rest in peace.

Bill was my Cuz and the little brother I never had. He didn't have a mean streak in him. We had four aunts and uncles living on Davison Street and 45th Street, not a pop fly ball away from each other. The Pirates and the Steelers filled the airways with sport, and Porky Chedwick and the oldies filled our musical lives. St. Mary's, Central Catholic, IUP, and dances at Leslie Park and Garfield filled our lives. We moved in separate directions, but our hearts were always connected. We might not speak for a year, but when we met or spoke and finished our "Hello, Cuz. How you doin'?" it was like stepping right in where you left off.
He and I talked a lot the week before he died. I told him, "Bill, you were somebody. Everyone in Lawrenceville knew you. You made a difference." Hambones was the heart of Lawrenceville, and Bill was its lifeblood.
Ashley, Kate, and Nancy I know you will miss him as much as you loved him.
Your Cuz,
Bernie Rihn

To all the Hammill Family, I'm so very sorry for your loss. We became good friends when Billy opened Hambone's in 1985. A few years ago Billy said to me, "I never realized that since I opened my place, there are so many people who I brought together by friendships, partnerships, marriages and even kids were made!" ..He was right, and all of the lives he touched will miss him. God Bless you my dear, old Friend.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Bill's passing. I had just talked with him last week, and he told me he was in hospice, but I thought he had more time. He was a really good friend to my brother, Dwight, for 20-plus years. They will soon be together again. I'm blessed that I had the opportunity to know you, even if only from a distance. Rest in peace, dear friend. I will miss you. Tricia Grindel

To Ashley and all of Billy's family.. my heartfelt condolences.. I can remember 20 some years ago, when Hambone's was the only game in town... My husband and I spent almost every Friday night there for dinner,,. He always took the time to stop and chat since they had known each other in their younger years... He fought with me about meatballs when I was in the kitchen.. he will be missed
