William Matheson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 9, 2025.
William Einar "Bill" Matheson, age 86, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, in Dickinson, Texas.

Bill was born on February 19, 1939, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, the son of George and Elizabeth (Lumsden) Matheson. He graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School with the class of 1957. Bill led a life marked by dedication, craftsmanship, and adventure. He graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry Management and went on to serve his country with distinction in the United States Navy, proudly serving in the naval blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Following his military service, Bill embarked on a successful career with Boise Cascade. Over the years, he held various roles within the company, ultimately retiring as the General Manager for Boise Cascade Office Products for the entire state of Hawaii. His leadership and commitment left a lasting impact on colleagues and clients alike.

Bill had an enduring passion for woodworking and sailing. A true craftsman at heart, he built one of his first homes by hand and later constructed a trimaran sailboat that he and his wife, Donna, sailed through the Caribbean for years. His love for the sea extended beyond sailing - he owned and rehabilitated several boats over the years, both motorized and sail-powered. In addition to his time on the water, Bill was an avid traveler who explored more than 75 countries via planes, trains, automobiles and cruise ships, embracing new cultures and experiences with enthusiasm.

Generous with his time and talents, Bill was known among those who knew him as someone always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether it was fixing a porch rail or installing an entire floor, he never hesitated to assist friends - or even friends of friends - with any project.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Donna Marie Matheson; two sons, Erik Einar (Audrey) Matheson in Tennessee, and Robb Thierman Matheson in Texas; three granddaughters, Alexandria Lyn Dockery, Madeline Matheson, and Sophia Matheson; and one great-grandson, Owen Lucas Yaeger. He is also survived by three sisters: Yvonne Baumeister, Lynn (Royce) Curtis, and Kathleen (Mike) Mauer, all in Wisconsin.

Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Matheson.

Bill's legacy lives on through the many lives he touched with his generosity, skillful hands, and adventurous spirit. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

Bill served with us as a volunteer on the USS Missouri's Teak Deck Crew from 1998-2003. We always had a great time, got a ton of work done on board, and enjoyed lunches at La Mariana via rides in his old white Jaguar. The crew got together with he and Donna whenever they made it back to O'ahu and had fun talking about the old days and loving going over stories of his time on board. His contributions were great and I think of him often when striding the decks to this day. He is very much missed. Fair winds and following seas, Bill. Shipmate, you stand relieved. We have the watch. Aloha 'Oe dear Bill.
