Obituary

William A. (Bill) Schoen Sr., 86, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away November 11, 2004 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born to Marion (Stephenson) Schoen and William A. Schoen on July 17, 1918. He grew up in Hill City, Minnesota. After graduating in pharmacy from the University of Minnesota, Bill entered the armed service. He served four years in the medical division of the Army Air Corp during World War II, including two years on Saipan. He was discharged in 1946 as a captain. After the war, he worked for Eli Lilly & Company for 36 years, retiring in 1983. He met and married Dorothy Reynolds, who came to Grand Forks to teach music, in 1950. Bill was active in the Elks, serving as Grand Exalted Ruler, with the Kiwanis and with the District Pharmaceutical Association, serving as president. Bill is survived by his wife, Dorothy, children Bill Schoen (Bev) Grand Forks, Bob, Wheaton, IL, Julie Lucht (Don), Enon, OH, Susan Griffin (Steve), Grand Forks, and Katy Churchill, Bismarck, ND. He is also survived by one brother, Charles, Belvidere, IL and sixteen grandchildren: Rob S., Ali, Rob G., Dave, Sara, Katie, Jessie, Dirk, Will, Joe, Jaclin, Casey, Kelly, Cody, Michelle and Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Jack. Memorials may be given to Holy Family Catholic Church, 1018 18th Ave So., Grand Forks, ND 58201 or the Nursing Fund in care of Altru Health Foundation, P.O. Box 6002, Grand Forks, ND 58206. Mass of Christian Burial: 1:30 p.m., Monday in Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks. Visitation: 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday with a 5:00 p.m. vigil service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel and one hour before the liturgy in the church on Monday. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks. Military Honors: Members of the American Legion Post 157 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817. The online memorial registry may be signed at, www.normanfuneral.com Gregory J. I am very sorry for you loss. I always considered Bill a friend. He called on me for several years at the hospital when he was a drug rep. We always had such nice conversations. He was truly a very good man and a gentleman. I have often thought about him over the years.
