William Davis Thompson

(June 2, 1927 - February 13, 2024)

William Davis Thompson, age 96, originally of Connecticut, passed away on February 13, 2024 in Juno Beach, FL.

A celebration of his life will be held later this summer in Connecticut, followed by a burial service at St. Lawrence Cemetery in West Haven. Details to be advised.

Bill Thompson was born in New Haven on June 2, 1927 to Albert and Frances (Mulvaney) Thompson. He graduated from the Choate School in Wallingford, CT and, after his service in the Pacific during World War II, he went on to receive a business degree from the University of Connecticut.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine Griffin Thompson, in 2010. They were married on November 30, 1957 in Hamden, CT and were by each other's side for 53 years.

Between Connecticut and the Chicago area, Bill had a career spanning decades in sales at Wallingford Steel, Allegheny Ludlum and Plymouth Tube. Outside of work he enjoyed sailing, reading, traveling and watching his beloved UCONN teams, the Yankees and long-suffering Giants. But, most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family from whom he derived, and gave great joy. His grandchildren often remarked that they thought Grandpa was the 'coolest' member of the family. Having long outlived his siblings, Bill was loved by his nieces and nephews as a surrogate father and family patriarch.

Bill is survived by his children, William Thompson, Jr. of West Hartford, CT (Louisa Percudoni), Carrie Thompson of Arlington, VA (Richard Worden), Catherine "Katie" Thompson of Mystic, CT (Joseph Reeb), Virginia "Ginny" Thompson of Richmond, VA (Howard Chilcoat), and Mark Thompson of Stonington, CT (Valerie Goulet). He also leaves six grandchildren: Blair Walsh (nee Thompson) (David Walsh), Joshua Worden (Diyora Khayitova), Noah Worden, Sophie Thompson, William Chilcoat, and Charles Thompson. He also leaves his numerous nieces and nephews as well as friends.

In addition to Geraldine, Bill is preceded in death by his siblings Virginia Milord, Elizabeth DeFrank, and Robert Thompson, along with their spouses, and his nephew, Robert Thompson, Jr.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to TrustBridge Hospice and Palliative Care of West Palm Beach, FL (5300 East Ave, West Palm Beach, FL 33407) or to your local hospice organization. Bill's family wishes to thank all of the staff at The Waterford and his personal caregivers, as well as TrustBridge staff, for their expert care, attention and love during his final weeks.

Bill took me sailing along the Long Island Sound on a beautiful fall afternoon and on another trip we visited the Canadian Maritime Providences and saw the famous Bay of Fundy in Newfoundland. We shared some very good laughs together at Plymouth Tube.

I am so saddened to hear of his passing. Mr. Thompson, father of my dearest college roommate, Ginny, I will cherish always the wonderful memories. He was the warm, caring, fun patriarch of an exceptional family. If one is known by one´s legacy, he was a great man indeed. Some of my favorite memories of him are the happy hours spent on his sailboat, or chatting during visits to the Thompson home. How I cherish those times and will never forget the warmth and love of Mr. and Mrs Thompson. Rest in peace, Skipper.

Grew up in Spring Glen, and for years heard fun stories about the Thompson family who lived across the street from Albertus. "Billy" was the youngest, and had lunch a few years ago with his brother in law, Art and my mother, Mary Skipp Phillips Winter. Condolences to all the Thompsons and Milords. We loved hearing about the beautiful personality of Mr. Thompson from Carrie, Richard, Noah and Joshua. So nice to learn how much they loved and admired "Grandpa/Dad" and that Mr. Thompson also liked to watch Uconn basketball.
May his spirit live with you in your heart and memories.

A good Dad to his 5 children. His positive, fun-loving personality. And his deep love and commitment to his wife, Geradine.
