Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 3, 2018.
William Henry "Bill" Wood, 95, of Lynchburg, died Monday, July 2, 2018, with his family by his side. He married Iris Elise Cooper "Dickie" Wood on March 22, 1947. They celebrated 71 years of marriage in 2018.

Born in Campbell Co., he was the son of the late Russell Ethridge Wood and the late Martha Goodman Wood. He was preceded in death by his brother R.E.Wood, Jr.

Bill was a long time active member of Calvary Baptist Church and he served proudly in the U.S. Army, assigned to the Pacific theater in World War II. After the war, Bill had a long, successful career with C&P Telephone Co. where he retired in 1982 after 35 years of service. He was a very civic minded person, enjoying 41 years of service to the Lions Club of VA having served as president of both the Christiansburg, VA club and, most recently, the Brookville-Timberlake Lions Club. He was very active in the Telephone Pioneers of America. Bill was an avid woodworker, crafting specialty wood items that he loved to share with family and friends.

In addition to his wife, Dickie, he is survived by three children, Sharon W. Cyphers (Bill) of Greenville, N.C., Terry R. Wood (Phyllis) of Bedford and William A. "Rusty" Wood (Lisa) of Forest and six grandchildren, Christopher Todd Cyphers (Susan), Jason Ashley Cyphers, Jessica Elise Wood Clark (Brad), Wm. Johnathan Wood (Natalie), Bryan Ethridge Wood and Andrew Patrick Wood; four great grandchildren, Elise Miller, Katherine Cyphers, Grace Wood and Madison Clark; one great great grandchild, Haven Eliza Mendyke and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 20957 Timberlake Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24502.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment will follow with military honors at Spring Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
