Willie Gardner, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 19, 2024.
Willie Gardner, Jr., aged 89, passed away on August 9, 2024, in La Bella Elder Care, Edwardsville, Illinois. Born on December 23, 1934, Shaw, Mississippi. Willie led a life marked by deep faith, love for his family, and a commitment to serving others.

Throughout his life, Willie was known for his robust spirit and unwavering faith. Although not affiliated with a specific church, he lived his life as a testament to his beliefs, often quoting Luke 6:31 and Matthew 7:12, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." This principle guided him in all his actions, whether he was interacting with family, friends, or strangers.

Willie's career journey began when he moved to East St. Louis in 1953. His work ethic shone through various roles, from a custodian at First National Bank in St. Louis, Missouri, to a butcher at Swift Meat Packing Plant in East St. Louis, Illinois, where he worked for 15 years. He retired in 1999 after 25 years as a dedicated bus driver for Bi-State Development in St. Louis, Missouri. Even after retirement, Willie continued to work miscellaneous jobs and devoted himself to charitable activities, always thankful for the blessings he received.

He is survived by his loving sister, Fannie Gardner of Dallas, Texas; his sons, Earl and Brian Gardner of Dallas, Texas, and Gregory (Diane) Gardner of Springfield, Illinois; his daughters, Elaine G. Bell of Vine Grove, Kentucky, Shanta Rasheed of East St. Louis, and Denise (Timothy) Dunn of St. Louis, Missouri; 27 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren; and a special cousin, Lillie Lee Thomas of East St. Louis, Illinois. Willie also leaves behind a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Essie Mae Gardner; his wives, Roberta Gardner and Katherin McClure Gardner; his brother, Larry Gardner; his sister, Pearline Gardner; his son, Eric D. Gardner; his granddaughter, Latashia Gardner; and his aunt, Lillie Lee Ellis.

Willie's educational journey was unique, having completed only the third grade, but he continued to educate himself through self-study, which served him well throughout his life. His hobbies included spending quality time with family and friends, fishing, barbecuing, and sharing his knowledge of God's grace and mercy.

A private memorial will be held as Willie donated his body to science at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Officer Funeral Home in East St. Louis, Illinois, is assisting the family during this time. Willie's life was a testament to giving, as he generously donated his time, resources, and even his body to science, reflecting his deep commitment to helping others.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the causes Willie supported during his lifetime, continuing his legacy of generosity and service.

All I can say is thank you! I can go on and on with what to thank you for! Thank you for giving me my first Bible and teaching me how to read it! Thank you for praying over me when I would have asthma attacks but most importantly thank you for teaching to be a fearless man! You taught me that if I wanted something I had to go out and get it myself. You encouraged me to not take the easy route by teaching my the value of hard work! Thank you so much for being the Grandfather I needed and teaching me how to survive! Your lessons have brought me a long way and out of some dark times. This world is cold but you prepared for it and to that I say Thank you!

With deepest sympathy to the Gardner family. Mr. Gardner was a stern, yet fair man. He never met a stranger, and if he did he became your buddy. Never at a loss for kind words. I am blessed to have shared him with you and I will always have fond memories. (especially, running to the living room when groceries were bring brought in the back door.. LOL) LOVE YOU ALL.....Pam

My grandfather was my Everything, he took care of my brother and I, and I thank God everyday for that. It was through him I learned who CHRIST was sitting at the table singing "Glory Hallelujah", playing the guitar, or reciting Psalms 23. I would never forget the lessons learned and the time spent together. I will forever cherish his memories in my heart and he will be missed terribly

Because he was, I am. My Grandfather's obedience made way for my opportunities. My Grandfather's sacrifices provided me with an example of how to live and kept me from trying to survive. My Grandfather's work ethic taught me to avoid having a hustle or settling for a gig but to obtain a career. My Grandfather's limited education required I purse knowledge and seek experiences that have made me wise. My Grandfather's grit and struggle gave me unyielding courage in the face of hardships. My Grandfather's love for his family endowed me with the unwavering agape I now have for mine. My Grandfather's relationship with God was what a father gives a son. I don't recall my Grandfather ever calling me by my first name. Neither do I recall ever calling him by his. Whenever, wherever, however, if ever... he called me, he called me Grandson. I thank God and am proud to have called Willie Gardner, Jr. my Grandad! Because he was, I am!

My dad was an ordinary man accomplishing extraordinary things. He was a man of faith, and it showed in his actions. I love you dad and thank you for all you did, the seen as wells as the unseen. May God peace and blessings be upon you. May God bless you to rest in peace, until we meet again.
