Baldwinville - Wilma J. Liukkonen, 96, on January 17, 2025

Born in Barre, Vermont, Wilma was the daughter of William and Nellie Johnson. For most of her near century on this earth Wilma lived in Baldwinville, Massachusetts. She is survived by her son Roger, six grandchildren (Cherisa, Tiffany, Jamie, Jackie, Joshua, and Gracie), ten great grandchildren (Kevin, Justina, Kenny, Lakoda, Phoenix, Harley, Aileen, Dylan, Krista, and Owen) and four, most beloved, great, great, grandchildren, Carter, Kenny, Boden and Rowan. Wilma was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, William (Bill) in 1984, and her daughter Aileen in 1985. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, dear friends and neighbors, former co-workers and fellow church members.

After working as a teller at the Gardner Savings Bank for several years, Wilma spent 28 years at the Highway and Water Department in Baldwinville as a secretary. She was a devoted member of the Memorial Congregational Church for as long as anyone can remember.

Wilma loved to go places and do things! In the 1960s her young family packed up the station wagon and took meandering trips in the New England countryside, the evidence of which were the many pennants that lined the walls of their garage. Later in life her niece Linda (who considered her a second mother) and Linda's husband Dan initiated many special "magical mystery tours" around and about New England, as well as many Queen Lake pontoon boat rides, and annual "Luke" family reunions. For several years she attended plays at Theatre at The Mount, first with Linda and then with nieces Karen and Kathleen. Afternoon tea at the Senior Center and potluck suppers were favorite pastimes. Coffee with nephew Ed was an every other Friday tradition for 20 years. Dear friend and neighbor Sue and Wilma were regulars at Lee's hotdog stand and Monument Park concerts, amongst many other adventures. Sue was also such an enormous help to her these past few years as she needed assistance.

Wilma treasured her granddaughter Cherisa, whom she thought of as a daughter and close confidant. When reflecting on her long life, Wilma surmised that the reason she reached her late nineties was because God wanted her to be able to see her beloved "great, greats," which tickled her so. Without fail, after any outing or event, Wilma would remark how lucky she was to have family and friends that wanted to include her in their life. Little did she realize it was all of us who were the lucky ones. Godspeed Wilma. We love you, we will miss you, and you will forever live in our hearts.

Calling hours will be at 10:30 AM, with a service following at 11:30 AM, at the Memorial Congregational Church, Baldwinville, MA on Saturday, June 28, 2025. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the church.
