My family and I wish to express our deepest sympathy at the passing of "Mr. Kelebay".
He was always a joyful man, always helpful, and a personal inspiration to me, with regards to my desire to recconect with my Ukrainian roots.
He was so passionate about his Ukrainian heritage, and had offerd me many times, any and all assistance I would need.
He will be missed.
Once again, our deepest sympathy to you

To the family and friends of Professor Kelebay,
I would like to wish my heartfelt sympathies to you and my deepest thanks to the man himself. I had the honour and priveledge of attending his Philosophy of Education class during my stint in McGill and it was easily a highlight of my time there. His singular wit and unique style helped to increase my love of Philosophy and I will be grateful always for that. His willingness to simply stand around outside of class and discuss almost anything was inspiring. As well, his ability to disarm, disprove or generally just disect any argument made the conversations all the more gratifying. I have many times found myself discussing his classes with both collegues and friends...I can think of no greater tribute to a teacher than the knowledge that what he did was remembered.
I thank you Professor Kelebay.

Dear Kelebay-Grafton Family,
I had Professor Kelebay in my second year at McGill. Specifically, I took his philosophy course. He absolutely inspired me with his sense of humour, his vibrant personality, and his totally unique teaching style. He was such an interesting professor; I loved attending his classes. When I found out that he had passed on, I couldn't believe it. His work just didn't seem complete. More people could have learned from him.
My thoughts are with you,

To the Kelebay Family;
I remember Gerry fondly, and most favourably, from our Loyola and Baldwin Cartier days. We met as college sophmores at Loyola in 1961 and became reacquainted as fellow history teachers at St. Thomas H.S. circa. 1967. Gerry(Yamy) was a larger than life character, a great teacher and an even better pub/bistro/dinner companion. A bon vivant to be sure. Although we spent most of our teaching time at different high schools , he at PCHS, moi at St Thomas, his reputation was widespread. When I moved to PCHS as a VP in 1976 I quickly learned of his legacy there even though he had departed for McGill a few years earlier.
I would like to assure his former Mc Gill students and colleagues that his reputation at the former Baldwin Cartier Catholic School Commission was equally stellar.
I am impressed, but not at all surprised, by the impressive array of tributes flowing his way from his former faculty students.
May he rest in peace.

Diana and family,

I am one, among so many, who have been saddened to learn of Gerry's passing. I started my career at McGill by filling your shoes as Gerry's assistant, while you left McGill to get married to him. Gerry was a powerful man, and a bit of a 'bandit', and that's what made him so accessible and loveable to so many. My favorite memory of Gerry is up on top of Mount Royal, (along time ago..) at a party in the Chateau. You were pregnant with your first girl, and Gerry grabbed you to dance a crazy polka, whirling you around and around till you were dizzy. Then he burst all the decorative balloons by jumping on them, like a kid. He was mischievious and fun. It is clear that "Red" was deeply loved by Yarema Kelebay, and I am sure you will miss him. I send you, and your girls, my warmest sympathies.

To the Kelebay Family,

My sincerest condolences to the family on Gregory's passing. From the number of entries in the guest book it appears that he was a very well-liked and respected man.

Through a number of unusual circumstances, it has come to my attention that the maternal grandmother of the late Gregory Kelebay was Jewish. If someone from the family could contact me by email I would very much like to speak to them.

Thanks

Diana, Alexandra and Katie,
Gerry was one of my favorites....he was remarkably kind, full of spunk, always had a warm hug and big smile for me and my boys. I am grateful for the many fond memories I have of the times we shared around your kitchen table, the verranda at the cottage or on the dock. He was taken away from us way too soon. I sure will miss him. My deepest sympathies to you all at this very sad time.

Diana and Family,

Dr. Kelebay was a wonderful professor and a great, inspirational man. His presence will be missed by all who knew whom, and those who never had the chance to talk with him will surely be missing out. I cannot imagine the pain you are going through, but I am praying for the best for you.

May the memory of him in happier times bring you comfort you in the future.

Diana, Alexandra, Katie, and Mrs. Kelebay,

Sandra and I are truly sorry for your loss. For us, Gerry will always be remembered as someone who inspired us to embrace life. He always welcomed us with a smile and a hug and quickly launched into a discussion of what was going on in his or our lives. What would start as an innocent exchange of pleasantries, would usually quickly turn into a lively debate. Gerry had a good way of teaching you about yourself and what was around you while making you feel intelligent. Although I sometimes did not share all his points of view, I would often leave the evening inspired about how I could become a better person.

Gerry will be truly missed by many;we're sorry that our boys won't have a chance to be touched by him as he has touched us.

Dear Mrs. Kelebay, Alexandra and Katie,

I would like to express my deepest sympathies on the passing of Mr. Kelebay. I had the pleasure of being taught by him for two of my McGill Education classes and I often speak of Mr. Kelebay as one of the most intelligent individuals I have ever met. He had an excellent understanding of history and synthesized and analyzed information like no one else. He was an excellent and inspiring orator - he truly had a gift. I teach at Villa Maria now and often think of his talks with us - they often serve as inspiration and I have even told my students about him (especially because of his exceptional vocabulary).

May God bless you and be with you at this difficult time.

To Yarema's family,
I extend my sincerest condolences for such an untimely loss and hope that many of these messages will provide comfort and solace in the years to come.
Yarema was a friend from my teenage years in the Ukrainian community and I had the opportunity to re-connect with many old friends at his wake and funeral. We all had the same feeling and wondered where all the years had gone. At different points most of us married, many moved away, we raised children and moved on with our lives and careers. Some stayed connected to Yarema and the community and others didn't and we all seemed to want to travel back in time to those early years just to hear Yarema say, "Come on guys, let's get moving." He was one to mobilize people and get everyone rolling. He was bigger than life and used his powers well. Those friday night youth club meetings at St. Mike's were great fun, so much energy, arguments and laughs. And then we went bowling and his competitiveness would give way to hysterical laughter when he missed a shot. The clandestine meetings to plot the liberation of Ukraine and then the marches down St. Catherine St. with placards and banners. We were all so empowered, Yarema was pushing and encouraging us with his strong deep voice and forceful manner. I think that when our parents found out what we were up to they actually feared for our lives, but that didn't deter Yarema and we all followed his lead. And those dances at UNO on Fairmount that kept us doing the polka, tango , etc. until the wee hours, and those late night walks home to different neighbourhoods because the buses had stopped running and we wouldn't spend the money on a taxi...in snow storms. But not before stopping to have some Chinese food on Park Ave. And the song sessions were wonderful, Yarema and Steve Janyk (another dear departed friend) belted out those Ukrainian love songs in perfect harmony with twenty other voices until tears streamed down our faces and we all collapsed on each other's shoulders. I felt that through him we all developed such a love for our suffering fatherland. He made us feel the passion. Even though I was born in Canada, I always identified myself as Ukrainian first, and Canadian second. It was that pride.
We had wonderful times as teenagers and young adults and for that I will be forever greatful. I regret that we never had the opportunity to re-connect and get to know each other's spouses and children for I feel that my family and I would have be the richer for the experience. Yarema did well in his shortened lifetime and accomplished more than most of us could ever hope to. He will be remembered for these accomplishments by people from the many organizations that he worked with and the students and colleagues that he touched but to us, the old Uki gang, he'll be remembered as Yammi, a hell of a guy!
Vichnaya Tobi Pamyat Yarema!

It is with great sadness that I came to learn about the passing away of professor Kelebay. I had come to known Dr. Kelebay during a process of applying for my Ph.D. studies at McGill. I asked Dr. Kelebay to be my advisor, but the life took its own course. I appreciate him and his positive attitude so much and wish to encourage the family to stay strong as they go through these challenging times of life. May God bless his family and keep you all in His hands. I have learnt a lot about Yarema Kelebay and can say that He has set standards for me to look up to.

Dear Diana and Family
I was greatly saddened to learn of Gerry’s passing. Our friendship here at McGill spanned 32 years. I remember with fondness the numerous and varied discussions we had. He was a teacher who valued creative discussion, debate and urged all his students to think, share and exchange ideas. He enjoyed respectfully engaging all individuals in discussion on topics passionately held. I will deeply miss his friendship and professional counsel.

I took a Ukrainian history course given by Gerry Kelebay at Concordia in the late 1970's. That was quite some time ago, but I have retained very vivid memories of that course, of very personable character, his teaching style, and his willingness to go that extra mile to make sure a point was understood. And then, on occasion, the class would move into the wine bar across the street to continue the discussions! Of the many history teachers I have encountered in my life, only three stand out as exceptional. He is among them. I was saddened to hear of his untimely passing, and extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Dear Diana - my thoughts go to you and your dear family at this very sad time. Take comfort in the love that Gerry shared with you, your kids and all the rest of the family. He will be dearly missed here at the Faculty. He will live on in the lives of those he touched.

I would like to send out my condolences to the family. He has helped me greatly during my first year in Education in McGill University. Whenever I think of Plato and Aristotle, I shall think of Prof. Kelebay. May he rest in peace.

I was very saddened today to learn of Professor Kelebay's death. I wish to express my deepest condolences to Diana and to all of his family, friends and colleagues. I took a class with him several years ago, and always enjoyed speaking with him whenever we crossed paths in the Faculty of Education building.

Sincerely,

Patricia O'Beirne
