When I needed a place to stay in 2007, she offered a bedroom. We lived together for almost a year. We kept in touch since then. My husband and I went back visit once and planned to pay her another one this spring. I owe so much to her and I learned so much from her. She lived on a minor income but never showed any self pity and always was generous to others. First month since I moved in, she bought me a pair of gloves and a scarf because I "walk to work and need it". I saw her golden heart and started to cry, since then I started to call her Mama. Every time we dined out she insisted she drive. I said Mom I am the one working and make money. She always say "You pay food and I pay gas, to be fair." Her calendar was full of birthdays, and she always managed to buy everyone (for so many grandchildren and great-grandchildren)a birthday gift. I could tell how much she loved every one of them. She was full of humor and always had fun in common daily life. I remember once we went out with her friends to a Germany restaurant, a chicken drum dropped to the floor, before I bent over to pick it up, Barb cried out to it: "run, chicken, run, this is your last chance!" We all laughed so hard to tears. Barb was always a busy lady, running around to help her friends all the time. She stayed in hospital with them, told me she reminded nurse to change diaper for her friend. She took her friends to doctor's appointment, hair saloon, dancing club, to name a few. She also told me her life stories when I told her some of my worries and concerns, I knew that was her way to answer my questions. She had arthritis and every joints hurts but she never asked anybody to help her mow the yard, clean the snow on the sidewalk, or anything. She never complained and always tried her best to get things done. I saw a proud, self respect, self support soul in her, in my eye she is a great woman, as great as any other women with big names in history! I thank God for me to get to know her and come across her in my life path! Every drop of my tears is a pearl of her love to me. I should have called earlier, so at least I could be with her last time. All of sudden we run out of time. I am terribly sorry Mom and I am going to miss you all the time. I know you will always be with me. When I wake up in the morning, you will be the first piece of sunshine casts into my bedroom. you will live in my breath, in my mind and in my heart. Forever!! I miss you, Mom!! Love, Haiyan

When we moved to town who would have thought we would be lucky to gain a neighbor like her? Barb was an amazing person! I'll always remember her trying to teach me how to garden, walking to get ice cream with my son, and sitting by the bon fire drinking a beer with my husband. She loved to tell us stories about her children and (great) grandchildren; her love and pride for them was amazing! Rest easy neighbor, it won't be the same around here without you. We miss you!
