James Hassan

CELINA -- James S. "Jamie" Hassan, 56, Celina, Ohio passed away 9:00 a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2024, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Ohio.

Jamie was born April 2, 1968, in Lima, Ohio, the son of Clark and Sue (Candler) Hassan. His mother survives in Celina, Ohio.

Jamie is also survived by his significant other, Lica Paguirigan Colwell, Charleston, South Carolina; step-daughter, Lillian Colwell; a brother, Marc (Christine Chambers) Hassan, Celina, Ohio; half-sister, Nancy McCarthy, Cincinnati, Ohio; Grandmother Bea Candler, Columbus Grove, Ohio; nine nephews, Nicholas Hassan, Jackson Hassan; Ryan (Ashley) McCarthy, Travis (Erin) McCarthy, Callan McCarthy, Connor McCarthy, Mulligan (Emma) McCarthy, Declan McCarthy, Finnegan McCarthy; a niece, Kyrsten (Kyle Feyereisen) Chambers; three aunts, Virginia (Tommie) Price, Ft. Jennings, Ohio. Laura (Randy) Frey, Kalida, Ohio. Pam (Willis) Gilleo, Celina, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father; brother and sister-in-law, Jeffrey and Kerrie Hassan; a niece, Madeline Hassan; brother-in-law Terry McCarthy; and an aunt, Sue Ellen Wagner.

Following graduation from Celina Senior High School, Jamie went on to excel at Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1990 with a B.A. in Math/Political Science, summa cum laude (3rd in his class), and Vanderbilt Law School in 1993. He started his career in New York City at Rogers & Wells (now Clifford Chance) in Real Estate and Finance.

In 1996 he was recruited by Kilpatrick Stockton to help create a Capital Markets/Real Estate Finance group. In 1998 he was promoted to counsel and assumed all client relation and management responsibilities for the group. Since the commercial mortgage-backed securities industry was in its infancy, Jamie structured and negotiated many new types of loans and agreements.

He then joined Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft in January of 2001 and worked out of their Charlotte and New York City offices, being promoted to special counsel in 2002 and equity partner in 2006. In January 2012 he moved to Charleston, SC, where he was retained by a start-up investment fund as their primary outside counsel.

Aside from Jamie's professional accomplishments, he was very creative and artistic. He had a passion for photography, and a love for sports that culminated in numerous photo galleries of high school athletes for MaxPreps Sports.

A gathering to celebrate the life of Jamie will be held at a later date.
