Mark Smith Obituary

Mark Leslie Smith 48 died Saturday November 12, 2011, with his family and friends by his side.

A service will be held Sunday November 20 at Abbot Loop Community Church; 2626 Abbot Road. Funeral services will be from 5-6 p.m. with a celebration of life potluck from 6-7:30 p.m.

Mark was born in Santa Maria, California on July 26, 1963 to Leon Leslie Carraway and Patricia Bea Smith. Mark came to Anchorage in 1970 and graduated from Bartlett High School in 1984. He moved from API to Hope Community Resources around 1975. Throughout his life Mark lived with wonderful foster parents, group home families, and supported living housemates.

Mark, well known by all as "never having a bad day", was deeply loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He embraced life to the fullest and brought joy to all those around him, and will be fondly remembered for his famous kisses on the cheek. To Mark, no one was an acquaintance everyone was a friend, and his jovial nature was infectious.

Mark, who was well known for his socializing, would often go to Wells Fargo, the O'Brady Restaurant in the Diamond Mall, the Jewel Lake Holiday Store, and numerous other stores and locations throughout Anchorage, for the simple pleasure of visiting with friends. He loved music and could often be found rocking out at Koot's, Hope Discovery Center, or the Music at the Park. Mark loved to bowl and made those at Jewel Lake Bowling and the Trophy Lounge his second family. You would often find him riding the People Mover downtown to Humpy's and the Saturday Market. Mark participated in local, state, and international Special Olympic events for years; and avidly participated in events sponsored through The Arc of Anchorage, Challenge Alaska, and Hope Community Resources. Mark's last place of work was at the downtown Court House with Assets, and was a member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church.

Mark is survived by his mother; Patti Smith, siblings; Liz (Paul) Hook, Steve (Stacy) Carraway, Dan Carraway, and Galena (Rick) Vanevey; nieces and nephews Buddy, Sammie, Ashley, Kadie, Stephen, Addy, and Harley; great nieces and nephew Alexandra, Colton, and Lily.

The family is asking in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Special Olympics Anchorage and/or Hope Community Resources both who loved and supported Mark for most of his life.

Ive known Mark since I was a young kid at the saturday market. Mark has always had a big place in my families heart and lives. I remember one year my mother went around the dimond center collecting donations for mark for christmas. The owner of O'bradys bought a limo. We picked Mark up in the limo, covered him in presents. Seriously, like 85 gifts I believe. And we went out looking at all the christmas lights accross the city. It taught me great lifes lessons. Ive also played santa for Mark numerous times. I love ya Mark. Rest Well Buddy

I used to see Mark at the Arc of Anchorage events. It's impossible to miss him, with his vibrant and enormous energy. I had the priviledge of witnessing how happy he made others and through those sights and sounds of laughter, he made me happy also. I never got one of his famous kisses, but wait... *tickle on the cheek* that's gotta be him! RIP Mark May we all remember your way of bringing joy to others and practice your way everyday.

I have known Mark well before I began working for Jewel Lake Bowling Alley. I was working the day we celebrated his recent birthday with him and his friends, bowling on 5 lanes. Everyday he would come into the bowling alley and happily say hello to all of the staff and the patrons that he knew for so long. He gave me the occassional hug and would ask me how I'm doing. He was always in high spirits and he will be unimaginably missed by myself and countless others.

Gonna miss my Co-DJ know that you are dancing in heaven........

Mark would come into our branch every week at the Dimond Mall. He was always so happy and full of light and never seemed to have a bad day. He always made sure to acknowledge any holiday and always wished you a happy holiday before it even came, just to make sure he got to tell you. He will be greatly missed by everyone on our team.

November 17, 2011

The first time I met Mark I was behind the teller line at the Wells Fargo inside the Dimond Mall, where I work. His energy was radiant, and I could tell what a kind soul he had. He always looked for specific tellers and would be so happy to see them here and have them help him. Always coming in and grabbing candy so he could take it with him, and listening to his music. I will always remember you Mark, and remember how you would light up the room and turn a bad day into a great day. I will miss your kisses on the cheek. We, the Wells Fargo Dimond Mall family, will miss you deeply! I am truly blessed to have known you!

Anchorge has lost a great man! I have met Mark all over anchorage since I moved here at the age of 7 in 1990(I am now 28)! I last saw him in August of this year at Jewel Lake Bowl as we were there for my daughters b-day. He must have given me 8-10 kisses on the cheek that night! I think he lived a fuller life than most of us could ever hope to have. These are the things that count in life. What an awesome man he was, he always brought a smile to my face and I hope to meet him again some day.

It has been a pleasure to have known Mark. He always had a smile and had a joy for life. He always made sure he said hi and gave kisses to the cheek. And when we were done bowling and leaving, he always said goodbye with the kisses to the cheek. He will surely be missed at our Thursday night bowling. Heaven has received the best Angel!

I first met Mark at the bus stop on 88th outside his apartment. Sometimes it would be weeks/months before we saw each other again in the neighborhood, though we never crossed paths again without a hug/kiss on the cheek that didn't illuminate the peace and joy from his life. It truly was a blessing to have crossed paths with him in this life. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.

For the past 15 years I had the pleasure of calling Mark my friend. From the years managing retail stores at the Dimond Center to a few years running the front desk at Jewel Lake Bowl, and whenever hanging out at Chilkoot Charlie's, I knew without a doubt, that any time I saw him, I could count on that big beaming smile, and a boisterous greeting, "Hi Jorge, good to see you buddy"!! That infectious spirit will be forever missed, but the memory will cheer us on forever as well. Godspeed Mark.

Like so many other people, Mark was a very special friend to me. I met him in the late 90's when I worked at the Trophy Lounge/Jewel Lake Bowl. He always greeted me with a kiss on the cheek & always wore a big smile between those rosy cheeks. He was such a happy & loving soul! I would often give him rides whenever I saw him walking which he always appreciated by blowing kisses to me as he got out. Mark will always have a special place in my heart & I will miss him dearly. My thoughts & prayers are with his family & many friends. God has a new Angel in Heaven! May you R.I.P. Mark. xox

I didn't know Mark very well at all, however I have never forgotten him. I worked at the mall for years and he would stop by at least once a week and he always brightened any day. He would always give me a sweet kiss on my hand/cheek and tell me about whatever was happening in his life at the momment. I always looked forward to our little visits and wish I would have ran into him after returning from out of state. His soul was beautiful!

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

I am so sorry to hear the news of Mark's death. Mark was a very special person--he loved unconditionally & everyone was a friend! What a spontaneous, energetic & positive part of this community he was! I met him years ago when he was a young teenager when he learned to downhill ski--he always remembered our time on the ski hill whenever our paths crossed! He certainly was a remarkable person, his presence blessed us all.

November 16, 2011

I will never forget Mark! He used to always come to the bowling alley when my friends and I would go bowling. Since we bowled on a league, we were there quite often! Mark always remembered me from the crowd and made sure that not only did I get a kiss, but he got one as well. Rest in peace my friend, as you are now one of god's angels!

I will miss Mark at the bowling center. He always said hi to me and my family, remembering our names and asking where someone was if they were not there with me. Thank you Mark for adding me to your list of friends, and all your kisses. You will be deeply missed.
