I first met Phil in 1988 when I started teaching at ONU. He was always friendly and upbeat. When he left ONU, I wondered why. A few years ago I ran into Phil, once when he was officiating at a faculty funeral for Kristo Boyadzhiev. We reconnected then and soon became frequent correspondents on Facebook. Phil was always thoughful, friendly, and funny even amidst his failing health. He will be missed, but I am very thankful that our paths crossed however intermittently.

Phil was a friend to all, and I was lucky enough to share some good times with him and other friends. My sympathy to Ladonna and family. RIP Phil!

I have been a neighbor of Phil and LaDonna for only a few years but enough to learn what wonderful people they are, not least for their concern for other people. I am so admiring of the grace with which they both handled Phil's illness and last days.

Growing up at Ada First UMC, Phil was one of the grown-ups I most enjoyed seeing at Sunday worship. He asked questions about what I was up to and genuinely listened to my answers. When I started out in ministry he gave me some of the first books for my pastoral library—books I still use today. He was a blessing in so many ways.

Phil Compton was one of the first faculty members I met in Ada when I visited there in May of 1994 to look for housing. The place he recommended ended up being my home for seven years. He was consistently kind, positive, and interesting. His wife LaDonna was equally appealing. She and Phil represent some of my happier moments at ONU.

We have so many memories of Phil going back to the days when Don and Phil taught in the Psyc., Soc., and Social Work Department at Ohio Northern University and we both attended Ada First Methodist Church but continuing even after we returned to Pennsylvania. He led by example and we learned a lot from him.
