Tim DeHaven Obituary

JENSEN BEACH FL — Tim DeHaven 74; died unexpectedly early Monday morning, March 22, 2021 at his home on Nettles Island. Tim is now with his loving wife, who passed away in August of 2020.

Timothy or Tim was born on May 22nd, 1946 in Findlay, Ohio to John and Mary DeHaven who proceeded him in death. He was married to JoAnn (Jo) DeHaven for almost 51 years.

Tim is survived by five children John (Tara) DeHaven, Thomas DeHaven, David DeHaven, Patrick (Megan) DeHaven and Holly (Rick) Monnier; eight grandchildren: Joey (Sara), Nick, Adele, Hannah, Gianna, Stella, Nolan, Heidi and a ninth grand child who is expected to arrive sometime in late June; a great-granddaughter Amelia and another great-grand child that is expected to arrive in September; two sisters Ann (Bill) Barkalow and Amy (Jon) Ballinger, several nieces and nephews. Jo's Parents Al and Sandy Fimiani proceeded her in death.

Tim was a graduate of Findlay High School. He talked fondly of his childhood, growing up on the west side of Findlay or as he called it the mean streets of West Main Cross. Tim was part of the first class that graduated from the new Findlay High School, Class of 1964. While growing up in Findlay Tim helped his parents at their hardware store on East Main Cross and at the garden center first on North Main St. Findlay and later at the location on Lima Ave. across from Cooper Tire Manufacturing. Tim was a hard worker and was soon running the landscape crew for his father during the summers while still in high school.

Tim is a graduate of John Carroll University, graduating with a degree in biology, Class of 1968. While at John Carroll he was introduced to the love of his life Jo. Tim and Jo loved music and going dancing. Upon graduating John Carroll, Tim was drafted into the Army and did his basic training at Fort Knox, KY. Upon completing basic, he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas where he trained to be a medic. Upon the completion of the medic training Tim was accepted to Officer Candidate School (OCS). In just six months Tim had risen in rank of a E-5.

After 23 weeks of the training at Ft. Belvoir VA; Tim completed his OCS training and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on September 26, 1969, just one year after entering the Army. Tim married Jo that October after which he was initially stationed in Washington DC. He then received his orders to Germany where he filled many leadership positions for the next 2 ½ years. Tim was awarded the rank of 1st lieutenant while in Germany. Tim and Jo had their oldest son John while they lived there. They would talk fondly of their time in Europe and the trips they took. Many friends and family came to visit them while they were stationed there.

Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Army in the summer of 1972, he returned to Findlay with Jo and John. He joined the family business DeHaven Home and Garden and would enjoy a 50-year career in the Garden Center, Landscape industry. Tim and Jo worked hard and built upon what his parents started in Findlay and Lima. They moved to Lima in 1974 so that Tim could run the Lima location. Tim and Jo would become ingrained in the Lima & Findlay communities. He was on numerous local community committees, boards, and civic clubs. Including but not limited to the YMCA, Bradfield Center, Lima Area Chamber of Commerce, Lima Noon Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus, United Way, Allen County Soil and Water Conservation District and The Rhodes State College Foundation Board. Tim was generous with his time and civic pride for the communities in which his business operated. He was a recipient of the Ebony and Ivory Award from Bradfield Center during the 80's. Tim loved that he was making a difference and appreciated the thousands of customers he helped over the years.

In Lima Tim and Jo raised their five children, they were members of St. Charles Borromeo Parish. They were extremely proud that all five of their children were graduates of Lima Central Catholic High School. And they would also talk about how all of their children graduated from college.

Tim enjoyed coaching cross country and was the head coach of the Lima Central Catholic Junior High Cross County boys' and girls' teams for several years. He loved coaching and mentoring the kids. Being a detailed person, he had meticulous records on their times and was highly competitive.

In December of 2016, their business closed, so in the spring of 2017, Tim and Jo decided to move to Nettles Island, Florida full time.

In Florida Tim and Jo became involved in the Nettles Island community. They quickly made friends and loved the various community groups and activities. Tim was Vice President of the Nettles Island Veteran's Club, coordinating visits from Congressman Brian Mast, he participated on the Spring Festival committee, Taste of Nettles and lent a hand to many neighbors and other committees in need. Tim and Jo were parishioners at Holy Family Catholic Church in Port St. Lucie. He was active in their Knights of Columbus. Tim loved helping people with their landscaping, along with his sons Tom and Dave. He enjoyed making special memories with his children and grandchildren on Nettles Island.

Tim's kids would like to thank all their friends that were openhearted to their parents on Nettles Island. You made them feel welcomed and we could never repay that kindness and love you showed our mom and dad. They were a special couple that will truly be missed, but not forgotten.

Visitation will be held at Martin Funeral Home, 961 S. Kanner Hwy, Stuart Florida 34494 on April 14th from 3-6pm with the Rosary and prayers being said at 6pm. Tim was a great boss. I worked for him in Lima. I started at the store at the age of 16 in the late sixties and continued through 1974. I was one of the employees who work with Tim on the landscaping for the Neil Armstrong Museum. RIP Tim.

Tim was a steadying influence on me in the dorm at Carroll. He was always, always smiling. There was nothing you could ask of him which he would not give if he could. We were not as close as we should have been over the years but when we did see each other the years hadn't seem to pass at all. Rest in peace my friend.

We miss DeHaven's and Tim & Jo. We went to DeHaven's in Findlay and Lima and enjoyed every season there. Summer for our garden plants and flowers. Fall for mums and pumpkins and bulbs that needed fall planting.
Winter for the beautiful Christmas decorations and poinsettias and just to browse the settings Jo was so good at creating. Spring was always time to get spring plants and flowers. I never visited there without learning some new horticulture facts that I could l use and enjoy. I was not a personal friend, but as a customer, I felt that DeHavens' was a special place. I have missed the stores and I feel so sorry for all you children and grandchildren and the loss of your parents. My prayers are with you all.

Tim and Jo became great friends of ours. We enjoyed dinner at Old City Prime and loved their stories of days gone by. We checked on them when the hurricane hit Florida and Tim was always so positive. He and Jo were wonderful people, friends, and parents. Now they can Rest In Peace together. We will miss them both!

As we all woke up on our little island the sun greeting us soon lead into great heavy hearts and sadness when each and everyone of us learned about Tim's sudden passing. Tim to Chuck & I was a man that had time for you with a smile on his face , worked so hard and a genuine kind person . We were so happy to tell him we sold our farm back in Ohio , he was so excited for us. I met Joanne when buying collections of her jewelry and Tim when we bought his planters and our freindship grew , that led into meeting all of their wonderful children and grandchildren. So as we wonder and try to make sense of it all lets look up and smile knowing he now is with his true and only love Joanne. Miss you our freinds. Chuck & Susie Rutherford.

The Christmas season was my favorite time at Dehavens, as was spring to walk through the green house! I could enjoy the beauty as well as my conversations with Jo Ann and Tim. I truly admired their dedication to hard work, and their community involvement. My mother and my aunts and cousins loved Christmas at Dehavens. I miss it every time I go past the store. Thanks for all the beautiful memories. RIP Tim!

Tim and Jo made such a difference in both the Lima and the Findlay communities during their time there. They were always available and their stores were the best! I for one have missed their experience and expertise. Not to mention all the community input they gave! May God bless them as they rest in eternal peace and may the mercy of God speed Tim to his Heavenly home with sweet Jo. Prayers of sympathy to all their loving families. My deepest thanks for Tim Service to our country. ✝ Cynthia Wells Teders

Our sincere condolences to the Dehaven family. They gave so much to the Lima Community. I remember years ago when I was working at St. Rita's late at night you would see them decorating the big Christmas Tree. I loved talking to him when I visited the store. Such a wonderful man and a wonderful family. God Bless

Tim was like a brother to me. My mom worked as a floral designer for many years, back in the day. He loved and treated my mom like a 2nd mother always. This just breaks my heart. My prayers go out to all of you kids and your families. He and your mom were always so proud of you!
