Darrell Haynes Obituary

Darrell Dean Haynes, Lodi resident since 1963, passed away peacefully with his wife Patty and family members by his side on Feb. 8, 2023 at the age of 88. He was born in 1934 in Stockton, the son of Jack and Lorraine Haynes.
After graduation from Stockton High School, Darrell attended the College of the Pacific and married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Lorraine Ridgley, in December 1954. He played on the football team and has been enshrined in the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of one of the Tigers' renowned teams. Darrell participated in activities including softball, fishing, family picnics and camping as an active member of Pacific Athletic Club. His love of sports carried over to his adult life. He coached youth teams in football and baseball and was past-president of Lodi Boosters of Boys Sports (BOBS). An avid and capable golfer, Darrell was a member (50 years) and past-president of the Woodbridge Country Club. He had great satisfaction playing golf with his wife, friends, children and grandchildren.
Darrell had a long and successful career with the California Department of Transportation. His contributions to the planning and construction of the state's freeway system cannot be underestimated. He continued his work for the State of California managing property acquisitions.
Darrell was the patriarch of his large family. Darrell and Patty often opened their Midvale Road home to host family and friends. Darrell's family treasures memories of picnics at Lodi Lake, snow skiing, time at Mason's Beach, trips to Aptos and playing games at their Dorrington cabin.
Darrell will be fondly remembered for his love and kindness. His humility and gratitude were second to none, and his commitment to his family and their loved ones will always be something to live up to. His yes was his yes, and his "I love you" meant the world. His loving spirit will live on through his family and friends, and his endearing smile will be everlasting. He was a sincerely loving man.
He is survived by his wife, Patty, and his children Jeff Haynes (Jill) and Cheryl Brakel (Kelly). Children Kathy Oglesby and Don Haynes (survived by Debbie) predeceased him. He is also survived by his brother Bert Haynes (Irene). Darrell is survived by grandchildren Christopher Oglesby, Jason Oglesby (Ayumi), Jenna Konkel (Lance), Alexa Citro (Dylan), Jessie Castaneda (Daniel), Tim Haynes, Noelani Bean, Kamden Brakel (Alexandra) and Kercia Hughes (John). He is survived by 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
There will be a celebration of Darrell's life on Saturday, March 18th at 10:00 a.m. in the University of the Pacific's Vereschagin Alumni House.

When I first met Darrell he was my brother Kelly's youth football coach. A few years later he became his father-in-law. Not only was Darrell a great youth mentor but he was an all around great guy. Once Kelly and Cheryl were married Darrell and Patty invited my Mom Carol and I to their holiday gatherings and treated us just like family.

The World has lost a great man and he will be missed by many. Love and light to Patty, Jeff, Cheryl and their families, Kathy and Don's families and all those precious great grandchildren. Cherish your memories of which you have many!

My sincere condolences to you Patty and your family. Doesn´t seem like that many years have passed since we all were sharing the excitement of fun high school days. Family friends and memories will help you through this difficult time. Speaking from experience as I have traveled that road.

I have so many fond memories of our family camping trips at Donner Lake and New Brighton Beach, playing cribbage, singing around the campfire. I'm so grateful for those times and those memories. Hugs to all of you from the Grassle Family.

Life soared for us in 1981 when our daughter, Jill, and Darrell's son, Jeff, got married in Morris Chapel. We enjoyed times spent with Darrell, Patty and their large and loving family. Thanksgivings at their Midvale home in Lodi were precious times indeed. Sharing grandparent status with Darrell and Patty has been life enhancing. We loved sharing interacting and appreciating with them at our mutual granddaughters' homes and at special celebrations.

Darrell was just a great guy. I grew up with his family and played a lot of golf with him. Always friendly, ready to have a cocktail and laugh about stuff. Gave me one of the best golf lessons ever. "Quit thinking so much!" He will be missed by a lot of people and especially his family.
